Ageas Bowl opens elite sports medicine centre
12:12pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in Hampshire Sport
The Ageas Bowl has partnered with the company that provides The Football Association with its medical and rehabilitation care at their training facility, St. George’s Park, to bring an elite sports medicine centre to the South Coast.
The “Perform at The Ageas Bowl” clinic will provide top level sports medicine and rehabilitation services to Hampshire’s cricketers but, crucially, its services will be open to everyone, from professional athletes through to local sports groups, amateur athletes and school teams.
The centre will offer full access to its team of sports medicine doctors, consultants and physiotherapists who also care for many of the sporting elite. High quality diagnostic and surgical services will be provided through the clinic’s partnership with Spire Southampton Hospital and this will ensure that each person using the centre will experience a seamless journey from injury or illness to full recovery. Additional services available on site will include podiatry, sports nutrition and sports psychology.
The new centre will be led by Dan Young, pictured, a specialist sports physiotherapist with 10 years experience of working with elite and amateur sportspersons.
Young said; “The new facility has been designed to meet the needs of all sporting levels, including disability sport. As well as having a well-equipped modern rehabilitation gym and multiple consultation suits, the facility benefits from an extensive outside rehabilitation area for conducting sport specific rehabilitation that you just cannot do inside.”
Christine Pfluger, a specialist physiotherapy manager from Spire Southampton Hospital will work closely with Dan to promote the services available at the centre to local sports clubs, schools, and colleges to ensure the local community and beyond have access to the elite facilities and services available. Jane Whitney Smith, Hospital Director for Spire Southampton Hospital said: “We are delighted to be joining forces with Hampshire Cricket to create Perform at The Ageas Bowl. This new facility will provide top class treatment for everyone in the region and patients can be confident they are receiving the same services available to professional athletes with the added benefit of Spire Southampton’s diagnostic and surgical expertise if required.’’
