EASTLEIGH’S players can head into tonight’s mighty Blue Square South top-six clash at AFC Wimbledon buoyed by the knowledge that the Spitfires WILL go all out for promotion to the Conference national if the opportunity arises.
The ravages of the credit crunch recently forced the Spitfires to slash their playing budget, begging the question of how they would cope financially if they were to join non-League’s elite in the Blue Square Premier. But director of football David Malone is adamant that the Stoneham Lane club would be able to cope – because virtually every football club in the country is in the same boat.
“Yes, we can go forward,” he said. “The economic situation is not peculiar to us. The financial bar has moved for everyone.
“No way are we expecting to get into the Conference next season but, if we did, we would survive because virtually everyone else is paddling the same boat as we are."
Eastleigh have mounting injury concerns ahead of tonight’s game. Striker-turned-centre-back Andy Forbes played most of the second half with a dead leg against Havant and defender Warren Goodhind will be out for at least a fortnight with a nerve problem that has affected the groin area.
