Saints lose Jack Cork to Watford

Saints manager Jan Poortvliet has suffered a huge New Year blow - after Jack Cork joined Watford on loan.

Cork has made a big impression in a struggling Saints side this season and his decision to rejoin new Watford manager Brendan Rodgers, his former reserve team coach at Chelsea, is a big setback to Jan Poortvliet, who was told the news two days ago.

Versatile Cork had been linked with a transfer-window move to Pompey but his loan to Watford is even worse news for Saints as the 19-year-old will now be playing for one of the club's relegation rivals.

Poortvliet said: "I'm sorry for us because Jack is a great player and it's a big loss, but the choice was up to him.

"I would have loved to have him for the rest of the season but was told two days ago that that wouldn't be the case."

Cork is on loan to Watford until the end of the season and will not have long to face his former teammates - Saints visit Vicarage Road on February 7.

But Poortvliet is trying to remain positive. He added: "We're busy looking at people to bring in and preparing for Manchester United without Jack - this gives opportunities to other players."

Other Watford loanees include Saints striker Grzegorz Rasiak, Arsenal's Gavin Hoyte and Chelsea's Liam Bridcutt.

Jan loan signings have been very questionable. Most he hardly uses. The ones he used have not made a great deal of a difference to the squad with the exception of Cork in his latta games. He also required players for the wrong postion and at times players he knows very little of. Now two we hear from him that they want to stay, have now moved on in a short space of time, that being Cork, and Alex!

Forest have now got Davis, and other clubs in trouble are acting. While Lowe just sits back on his gamble waiting for the club to hit the wall. This man has got rid of others for less. What is he waiting for, or simply he is not man enough to admitt his gamble has not worked.

last week he (cork) declared that he wanted to stay with us, what changed?!! He has just switched one relagation battle for another. Something is VERY VERY VERY wrong with the club at the minute, worse than i think we (the fans) have feared.I think the timing of the two signings yesterday was a ploy to please fans all the while a mass mass exodus is being prepared behind closed doors.

Thanks Jack for your service this season - shame some of the permanent players here couldn't perform as well as you did week in week out!

Other than Kelvin Davies he has been the only one who has actually played above average this season!!

RIP Saints.

Couzzy you are so right, the only decent signing Jan has made couldn't wait to leave. As for those 2 signed yesterday perhaps Jan knows more than David Moyes!! 2 and a half year deal for Molyneaux who couldn't get near Evertons first team and a castoff from 1st div Millwall. Just a very sick joke, its all ending in tears.

Dear Rupert,

Why is it that Arsene Wenger isn't beating a path to your door to give some of his youngsters the 'total football' experience at Southampton?

Could it be that like everyone else in football he sees it for what it really is 'total nonsense'?

Nurse come quickly, it's time again for Mr Lowe's medication.

No Cork - Tommorow we will find out no Surman - No Llana & possibly no Rudi and who knows possibly Kelvin might develop a dodgy back?
YoumLowe lovies are doing SFC no good its time for change and there is only one way thats going to happen and thats to get rid of Lowe!

I don't think the club are to blame on this one. He stated quite clearly that he wanted to stay and i think we quite clearly stated that we wanted him to stay. What Jack Cork forgot to add to his 'i really want to stay here' comments were......unless a better offer comes along. I was commending his loyalty to the cause only a week or so ago. Yeah he's not our player but why come out and say how happy you are and then jump ship when one of your old mates comes calling? I could understand if it was a premier league club.

All this 'thanks Jack for the service' nonsense. He came to us as he wasn't getting a game with his club. He got paid, He played every week. As a result of that he got into the under 21 set-up. Now he's used us to raise his profile he's off.

First Pearce now Cork. We need to review these loan signings. Before we were relegated I can't remember any players coming on loan. We should buy someone, even if it's from the lower divisions, to play and right back and centre back.

With Cork gone (and to Watford of all clubs) we are as good as down....Jack showed in the games he played just what this club needs to play for the red and white, its just a pity other players in the squad don't share his determination.

Also the management team knew he was not signing a few days ago which makes it all the harder to swallow and they tried to soften the blow with news of 2 2nd rate signings.

Also the Spin about Surman and Lallana being injured is quite franlkly an insult to the fans intelligence as they are next out for peanuts, this club is on the ropes and we all know it....TIME FOR ACTION!!!

Whats the betting that before the season is out Rupert is blooding our star 14 year old and touting him as the next Pele. Looks as though that's the way its heading. Strong chance of losing Davis, Surman, Lallana, Skacel, Euell, Saganowski (again), McGoldrick, BWP, Wotton, Dyer, White, Schneiderlein. Already lost Peckhardt Cork, Robertson and Pearce. Svensson and Thomas unlikley to kick a ball again this season. Don't be surprised if there are bids for Gobern, Raccine and McLaggon as well. Give this Molyneux a chance though but not sure why we bothered with Smith.

Happy New Year To You All!!

I found it interesting that all of the 'Lowe Lovers' and 'Blind Faith' Supporters should comment about us 'More Cautionary' Supporters after the 2 Points lost against Reading.... I believe the spin was much on the lines of 'There were no Lowe Protests' and 'Look at how many people turned out'.... Interestingly, I expected us to get a sizeable increase in attendance in preparation for the farcical Man Utd fixture (obviously people rapidly trying to get a purchase history!)...

Lets not fool ourselves - Chelsea would have been certainly subsidizing if not paying all of Corks wages whilst on loan with us.... The reason he will have gone to Watford is more likely that he is disillusioned with something major at SFC... MONEY WOULD MOST DEFINITELY NOT BE A FACTOR.

I also would join those who have commended his performances in the red and white.... he and Kelvin have been consistent and showed effort!

As for the TWO FANTASTIC SIGNINGS yesterday!!!... well!!! I am so pleased that we are addressing our width issues!!!... eeerrrrrmmmmm.... dont we already have Dyer, Thompson, McGlaggon, Holmes!! Why sign Smith???? he looked poor at best the other day!!

Then it is also good to see we have begun to address our defensive woes.... OH NO!!!... the best the article could state was that he hit a free kick!... (I admit it was a hell of a goal though!)...

Jan and Lowe are selling this club up the river.... we are making no signings of any real worth - no signings that demonstrate that they have what it takes to get us out of this relegation battle....

This has no gone too far and I actually think that even if we get rid of Jan we are still doomed to League 1(but Lowe wont do that as it will show that he failed).

I love this club.... but I am resigned to the fact that the board, the management and many of the players have laughed at the expense of our supporters...

One of the main arguments put forward in favour of the "Total Football Revolution" (sounds even sillier now than it did in July doesn't it?)was that it would lead to stability. A young team growing up together, it might take a while to gel but in the long term, blah blah, blah. If THIS is stability and long-term planning going in to such a crucial month then I am a DUTCHMAN

This Lowe is the problem with getting in too many loanees! If they start playing well their club will want them back...and they don't have any loyalty to Saints whatsoever! Cork even said himself that there's a few players at Saints who want to be playing at a higher level and are capable. Cork must know the ones who will go...Surman and Lallana, and he felt if they go then Saints will be rubbish!! So why stay??

Saints are well and truly in a relegation fight now and do not look like they have the fight to stay up! I would get Dowie in now and give them a chance...but I fear that Lowe expects them to go down anyway. Maybe we should do a leeds go into Administration take the reduction and start again next year for Div 1! The younger players should be able to win some games in that league!

Im so desperate for Lowe to go so that the club can unite again and all the stayaways that have also lost the club millions in lost revenue come back!! Cork left because of our set up, and because we concded like water dispite having a good defence.

When we go down we should not count on easy wins and a speedy return to the Championship: look at Leeds. Cork was our best loanee by far. Drew and Lallana were called Saints' "crown jewels" in the Echo, by the way. I suppose they may be by comparison with the rest of them, but they aren't that good. It will be interesting to see if Drew goes to Championship Reading and not the big Premiership club he thinks he deserves. Lowe, Wilde and the Dutchmen OUT....

Jack has gone. There's no point in trying to have a post-mortem over it. He's familiar with the Watford man, likes to play for him, so he's gone.
I agree with the other comments on here about Surman & Lallana not playing. Pure coincidence that they won't then be cup-tied if they're sold, and therefore worth more??? Don't think so. We can all see through that one.
Large crowd for the Reading match could have had something to do with the fact that people wanting tickets for the Man Utd Match had to buy a ticket for another match. I wasn't born cynical, just driven to it.
The reality is that Jan will play 4-5-1 (or a variant of it) because he is trying to prove that it works. He's also trying to prove that the youth policy will work. I will support Saints on Sunday (in hte norhtam stand with all the other noisy yobs, but I've bought my ticket, I'll be a noisy yob if I want) but I predict a cricket score. THe 'Head in the sand- I'm confident that the results we need are just around the corner' attitude is going to kill the club. I wonder where Poortvliet gets his obstinacy from. THere were fans who said to give the set up 10 games. THey shouted it loud and proud in July. Where are they now???
Enough said.

Major Sir Jerry Pending, Ward 10 says...
1:55pm Fri 2 Jan 09

A disaster - but not surprising. Jack Cork could see what a rubbish set-up Saints have got with this dutch outfit and obviously wanted to work again with someone who he could understand! Gambling on Svensson's fitness got us relegated before and the same will happen again as Lowe not only makes mistakes but keeps making the same mistakes (remember Gray and then Wigley!?). The man is a fool when it comes to football matters pure and simple. His master plan of using a team of home-grown youngsters to get us back to the premiership is fatally flawed. The decent players will never be around long enough - first offer that comes in from a higher league club then either the player will want away or Lowe will take the cash. League one here we come!

Then we get Dyer back only to loan him out again to the end of the season. Alex Pearce now you see him: now you don`t. Jack Cork to Watford was always going to happen. Hopefully Alex Fergusson will realise that we are going to field an accademy side and will give us a draw so we can cash in at Old Trafford. After all it is Pantomime season.
I am still 100% behind the boys but fear we may now get tonked by Man Utd and that will do us no good at all. If you are the last one out SMS you will not have to turn the lights out as by then the electric would have been cut off.

Even if we score first, it will just make them angry. Kelvin must have used up his share of luck this season with the amount of world class stops already.
If United laid siege to our goal for more than 15-mins we will buckle never mind lasting 85-mins. If we went 2-0 up, whilst everyone would be wetting themselves - we can't defend. Face the facts United are the best club team in the world - they won't panic. They know we can only play for 75-mins...that last 15-mins they are more than capable of sticking 3 past our defence.
Cheer up Rupert the money is in the bank...se if you can pursuade Sir Alex to play for a draw and get their youth team out again at OT for a replay!

You cant question Cork's commitment. He has left one relegation battle for another adn he'll be getting paid the same as he was here.Has anyone thought that we might have let him go? And Pearce? Thats my view. We'll get cheaper players in on loan, or just stick Lancashire in there. He'd send us down on his own, pretty much every game he plays he gives away a penalty or gets sent off. As of today we are down. The only hope we have is if someone comes in and buys us, but that wont happen because lowe and Wilde want too much for their shares. I cant see any light at the end of the tunnel. We wont have a club within two years. One more year at St Mary's before its sold and then we'll be using the Madjeski, then we'll be gone. I am not quite so pessimistic now but if we fail to attract a couple of defenders before the end of Jan we will continue to be mugged out of games. I hear what you are saying and you're definatley not alone.
Something needs to be done sooner rather than later, I'd love to see the fans voice there opinions and I guess with the attendance being the highest this season on Sunday that would be the ideal time to have a moan.
The mood around the City reminds me of our first season in the Championship, everyone wanted Rupert out then and we kind of succeeded, we got Crouch and allthough I really liked him and felt that he tried his best it didn't work so back came Lowe, he's like a boomerang, we need him to go for good, has anyone got any ideas? ? ?
Lets hope that we cause an upset at the weekend and then go on to get some well needed points in the league.

Keep believing, if you can't then start hoping and praying, we've all got our different opinions but we all LOVE the SAINTS.

The only hope now is down to us fans. We need to make life uncomfortable for Lowe and Portvlieet that they both pack their bags and go. We are down if they stay so we cant be any worse off if we get rid of them. Lowe needs to know just how much he is hated every game before, during and after.

Dear Rupert,

Take a look at this priceless quote on the official website from that dumb dutch coach you appointed: 'We need a forward who is that extra bit special, someone who can take us to 2-0 and beyond, although the boys in our team are not far off being able to do that'.

Listen here Rupert, we have managed just 7 goals in the last 10 Championship games, and you expect the fans to swallow the fact that 'the boys in our team are not far off being able to do that'.

Don't insult our intelligence. Taxi for Poortvliet.

Nurse come quickly, it's time for Mr Lowe's enema.

How about all turning up with pictures of Lawrie Mac holding the FA cup. A reminder to that Buffoon Lowe that we are a football club not a train spotters club. Humiliate him on TV for his pettiness.
Support the Saints-Terrorise the Board!

Someone said "its time for action" but that is just hot air.We all feel deeply about the way we have been forced to our knees with relegation and possible administration on the horizon. But WHAT CAN WE DO!!!!Absolutely nothing ,getting rid of Lowe would leave a vacuum and a poison chalice that noone else would want to take up.WE HAVE TO GRIN AND BEAR IT AS WE SEE OUR CLUB DESTROYED.Let's be realistic there are no fairy god mother, with stacks of cash and no one wanting to be on sinking ship so we have to stand aside and watch her sink.Did someone say apessimist? Not me I have tried this season to be an optimist but we must not be like Rupert and delude ourselves.

Lots of clubs are in debt but not all clubs are running an agist recruitment policy as is being done at SMS.

It seems that the first questions being asked of any potential signing is "How old are you?" and "How cheap are you?", when it should be "Tell me what you can do to improve this team?" and "How much does joining this mean to you?"

Our debts are well catalogued and our money is limited, but surely we have the right to question if the money is being spent wisely and not frittered away on signing players based on what they will accept in their wage packet rather than what they can offer in terms of ability and commitment on the field of play?

Still it seems that one money saving exercise has been carried out.
Judging by the lack of comments by certain people, it would appear the PR payments have been stopped.

Can anyone get hold of Lowes address? If we can make this widely known then he would have to quit, and leave the country! It's the only way i can think that we can get rid of him. Someone must know it, or be able to find it. I'll be the first one there protesting at his front gate.

Why so you need Lowes address for? He works at SMS and is seen there on a regular basis.

Just contact your friendly policeman with access to SWansea records and ask for the address of the car he drives! Fancy a protest march in the Cotswolds then?

Although just like Jack Straw who didn't drive and yet had a major input into the road development plans for the future...Rupert seems to be in the same position when Managing a football club!
