Mark Fry wants to be able to give good news to Southampton fans

SAINTS administrator Mark Fry last night admitted the Swiss consortium “tick all the right boxes” with regards to a takeover at St Mary’s.

Though there are “still a couple of issues outstanding”, Fry exclusively told the Daily Echo “they were nothing major”.

Fry also said there were two other bids “pushing exceptionally hard” if no deal with the Swiss could be completed.

The Liebherr Group – one of Switzerland’s largest industrial companies with a turnover of over £8 billion in 2008 – are reportedly behind the Swiss bid.

Click below to see a video of today's headlines in sixty seconds

The company already have links with Southampton as only last month they provided two new cranes for the city’s container terminal in the docks.

Meanwhile, a worldwide financial services group believe THEY are close to a takeover deal.

As revealed in the Echo last week, they have enlisted the help of former Football League chairman Keith Harris to help with their negotiations.

Further talks were planned this morning between Fry and the group.

A third consortium fronted by controversial former York City chairman John Batchelor also remain in the picture, though the Echo understands they are a very distant third in a three-horse race.

Last night, talking about the Swiss, Fry said: “The lawyers have been working with the current (preferred) buyer over the weekend.”

“There are one or two final issues to be resolved.”

“I am hoping they could be what Saints need to take it back to where it should be and that’s why we are sticking so much to them.”

“This international buyer seems to tick all the right boxes and we are keen to do a deal with them.

“There are still a couple of issues outstanding but it's nothing major.

“It’s very frustrating because we all want this to come to an end.

“It’s just a case of getting people to dot the I’s and cross the t’s.

“They are very busy in the background sorting everything out so I remain very hopeful.

“We are quite along way along with the international group. They have done all the due diligence.

“I will be relieved when it is all done because when the club is sold we will have achieved what we set out to achieve.

“We are concerned at this time because the pre-season ticks along and everything needs to be put in place to make sure the club can go forward.

“The sooner we can get a deal done the better.

“We are relying on a lot of goodwill from the players and staff.

“It will be nice to give them some surety.

The Liebherr Group is a German manufacturing complex established in 1949 by Hans Liebherr, headquartered in Biberach an der Riss, Baden-Württemberg. The Liebherr Group's holding company is Liebherr-Internation
al AG in Bulle, Switzerland, which is entirely owned by members of the Liebherr family. Current-generation family ownership is held by Willi and Isolde Liebherr, who are listed among the billionaires of 2005.

Beginning with the production of affordable tower cranes, Liebherr has expanded to aircraft parts and household appliances such as refrigerators. The company is a major supplier of aircraft parts to Airbus S.A.S. Liebherr also produces some of the largest mining and digging tools in the world, such as loaders, excavators and extreme-size dump trucks.

Over the years, the family business has grown into what is today a group of companies, employing a workforce of approximately 25,000 in more than 100 companies in several countries.

In December 2004, one German site put Liebherr's dumpers in first and sixth place as the world's biggest, while their largest excavator got fifth position.

Liebherr currently produces one of the world's largest mining trucks, the T 282 B. It also recently introduced the new nine-axle model LTM 11200-9.1 which received the prestigious award of Development of the Year (2007), for being the world's most powerful mobile crane, with a 100 metres (328 ft) telescopic boom.

Liebherr has locations in many countries, including Germany, Britain, Ireland, and the United States. The factory in Killarney, Ireland manufactures container cranes, which are exported worldwide through the local port of Fenit.

It is important that the fans return and too many of us have seen how CLUELESS Wotte is.
- His tactics are to just hoof the ball up field.
- There is NO preparation before games as to who is marking who at corners and setplays.

He was the cheap option last season and was found to be out of his depth as a Manager.

Sorry but this kind of stirring ended last week. This week the threads should be full of support for the new regime from Wotte and his team to his moment as he meets the new owners and gets the lads out to Totton and then on to Bournemouth. You need to vent that hot air at the grounds cheering the team on as we climb the league back to the prem.

It was not Mark Fry. PG put the half mil on the table and got exc. Then led us all on a dance. Fry pulled the pin the second they failed to front with the money on the last day of their exc period. That is a fact you have to except and move on.

Say what you will but when Keith Harris deals, he gets it done and doesn't take prisoners.

Mark Wotte was on Solent Radio just a while ago saying he was waiting to meet the new owners to talk budgets. The staff (according to threads) were told to be in this morning.

Its so close you feel the electricity in the air. Now it really is time to get behind the team and show The Liebherr's they are doing something that is very much appreciated and supported in the great town of Southampton.

I wish I could get over.. and will asap. Meanwhile yell loud enough for this big mouthed kiwi git who grew up down Graham Road. Up the Saints PS don't Forget "St Yorkie" (per above) is car pooling to Totton Unite!!!!

Great news I hope. One word of warning for people thinking billionaire owner = silly spending: rich people are usually rich for a reason, they don't throw their money around.

Of course there are exceptions, but they aren't generally happy ones – splashing the cash generally means they see the club as a plaything rather than a serious business.

That's not to say this isn't fantastic for Saints if it goes through - it most definitely would be.

But I think anyone expecting crazy spending needs to reign themselves in right now.

Having financial stability and the funds on hand if necessary would be fantastic though.

Have to agree with Northern Saint (I am qualified). The exclusivity period could have done immense damage to the club and I doubt it did the creditors much good either.
Should have said montecristosaint.
You've missed the point which is what do we actually know about the circumstances surrounding this other than Daily Echo, occassional statements from either side and the odd interview on Sky Sports.

I'm qualifed too and deal in business disposals and know that the truth is usually dealt with behind closed doors so to make negative comments like that is just pure ignorance.

I seem to remember that Pinnacle where the only interested party at the time so do we really know what options Fry had when the wages weren't paid?!? Were the creditors looking for any option of some cash, etc.

Understandably some fans simply don't believe it (and who can really blame them) but we all just long for the news to be right and to at last have a positive basis on which to move forward.

The waiting is dreadful for all Saints. However, that will soon be pushed aside IF a postive result arrives. Heres praying but not assuming anything.

I suspect we don't know enough of the facts (indeed what do we really know at all) to criticise Mark Fry at this stage and it may well transpire that he has done a terrific job in the circumstances. If it all goes wrong we should be wary not to aim for him before we find out what has really been going on. But one can understand the natural response to find someone to blame given the years of bad news we have been enduring.

Absolutely. This isn't like Keith Harris's client at Chelsea or Man City with rich private investors The Liebherr Group is a long establish business who really can offer us a path to stability and a fast track to the prem where they are more likely to get a return on their money.

It is good that they are not given to company break up or on selling. They usually invest long term, invest large sums in development and usually do well. They wouldn't be using Harris as a broker if they weren't out to make the deal stick.

I'm nicely excited, have feet on the ground and have a drink ready for the big news.. any time now would be great

Saints, with the costs of running the stadium, training ground, youth, ect. can only be considered a decent sound business when floating mid table in the Premiership in front full houses. It then becomes a very attractive and profitable proposition. Call me biased or niave if you like, but with our support and facilitys I firmly believe this to be our proper place. Thats why I expect the Swiss, if they take over, to provide reasonable but sensible investmest to get us there. Anything less would be a waste of business potential, and they will be aware of this.

And no, I dont mind if they make a reasonable long term profit out of the club as long as we are back where we belong.

What I like about the Liebherr Group is that it's a proper old-fashioned manufacturing business which has good relations with trade unions and actually makes tangible things that are of use.

There's an honesty and integrity about that which would make it a better owner than some 'financial services' company and it's certainly better than being owned by a Russian gangster or an arms dealer or someone from the Middle East with a questionable human rights record. It would basically make us morally superior to the Skates.

And I agree that they probably wouldn't splash out tens of millions on players instantly, but then if you're a League 1 club there's a limit to how much you can spend anyway as the top players just won't come to this division.

Anyway, fingers crossed it all happens, and soon.

The Liebherr Group is huge but they are sensible long term investors. If they want a return it will come through getting the club up to the prem , filling the stadium and getting great tv and sponsorship deals. That does cost and they can afford it.

The feet have to stay on the ground for the moment.

Meanwhile it would be fantastic if we can get together and get to Totton and support Mark Wotte and the team.. Tuesday 7.45pm

Up The Saints

So why the interest from Switzerland? Don't they have football teams there that they could buy?

It doesn't wash, unless laudering something is this bid's real objective.

I reckon it's a figment of Fry's imagination designed to entice more cash from the only serious bid he's recieved so far, the 1 from the asset stripping organisation up north.

Pimple's fannying about was tolerated for the same reason, to get the price up.

Next up is that the fans will go nuts about the asset stripping deal paving the way for Lowe top cruise back in as the saviour of the club & having stiffed his creditors into the bargin - & yes I do think he had that planned all along.

I wholeheartedly agree. I don't think any club deserve to be a plaything and get financed to success. We are no exception. Keith Harris is NOT fronting the Swiss Liebherr bid - he is fronting another one, identity unknown. The identity of the potential owners being advised by investment banker Harris is unknown, but... the Swiss interest is backed by the Liebherr Group."

This article has been updated since I read it first and it seems a bit confused now.

It isn't clear when it is referring to the international bid or the Swiss bid, which I believed were two separate bids.

I think there has been too much hasty cutting and pasting and the result is a mishmash of two stories, neither of which now make sense.

According to the Mail, Keith Harris and Orville are connected to the Swiss bid, but according to this one, it's the international bid.

Fry says here that the "international bid" ticks all the boxes.

Is that the Swiss international bid of the global bid?

Odd?

I think there has been too much hasty cutting and pasting and the result is a mishmash of two stories, neither of which now make sense. According to the Mail, Keith Harris and Orville are connected to the Swiss bid, but according to this one, it's the international bid. Fry says here that the "international bid" ticks all the boxes. Is that the Swiss international bid of the global bid? I'm not going to start slagging the Echo, but I'm confused.
In the quotes, Fry refers to the Swiss bid as the "International" group.

The worldwide group are seperate to the Swiss.

Liebherr family behind Saints bid

Southampton Football Club is on the verge of being taken over by a member of one of Europe's biggest business dynasties, reports BBC Radio Solent.

A member of the family behind the Swiss-based Liebherr Holdings group is closing in on a purchase at St Mary's.

The bid has not come, as reported, from siblings Isolde and Willi Leibherr, or their Leibherr Group company.

Administrator Mark Fry said: "Although you're never sure a buyer won't pull out, I'm more confident of a sale."

Before a deal can be completed, there are several issues that have to be sorted out, including the Football League carrying out a period of due diligence on the club's prospective new owners.

The Liebherr Group is a multi-national company, which has been at the forefront of the construction industry worldwide for over 50 years.

The administrator's deadline for the sale of the football club passed on Friday, without him carrying out a threat to wind up the club.

Southampton went into administration in April, and as a result, will start the League One season on minus 10 points.

On 30 June, the Pinnacle group, headed by former Saints player Matthew Le Tissier, pulled out of negotiations to take over the club.

As Swedish Tony would say - Buying a football club is very much like making love to a beautiful woman - first you must make sure you have enough money, and then you examine things closely to make sure you're getting what you think you'getting. But once you decide to go ahead, you had better be able to deliver what you promise, otherwise you may have to withdraw at the last minute.

until any takeover of Southampton Football Club is signed, sealed, and truly delivered I will not believe anything that Mark Fry, or anybody else involved with possible consortiums to takeover the club. I have become truly fed up now it's very boring and old news repeating itself. Hopefully when and if a takeover is finally completed there will be a new manager in because Mark Wotte is useless, no tactical knowledge, continues to play formation that clearly never worked, and will definately not get Southampton out of League 1 playing like we did under his so-called management during the second half of the season!

I think its the end of 8 days of dealing with Liebherr Group. The biggest thing is that all the creditors have to sign off individually with 30m worth to sign off it takes ages.
It sounds like Liebherr have done everything, the Football League now have their turn to check out The Liebherr book (no doubt a group put forward to buy the club) and that should be a formality... Mark Fry has done well picking them and has kept his cautious optimism nicely grounded.

I'm interested in who is behind The World Wide Financial Group represented by Keith Harris. He is a big player in football take overs so it must be some serious buyers to enlist him.

Gillico is lost at sea on an island cos their skipper was bonking Ginger York and crashed on the rocks.

It's said to be a three way race so obviously Smiling Mickey didn't raise the ashes of Pinnacle. I guess Matt is quiet as he will be hoping for a job with Liebherr's at the club.

I understand that the players signed up by the Lowe era had a relegation salary drop built in to their contracts. The others were told by Mark Wotte that the money they would get in League one was nothing like what they were used to... but I couldn't find any ref to salary caps.

Given the right financial backing, a reasonable business person could turn Saints quickly into a profit making machine.

All debts and loans must go any non-profit making area within the ground have to be very quickly analysed and fixed or cut.

Tight financial control with department managers rigidly adhering to P&Ls and budget targets.

A rational expectation of investment to player base with bonuses and fines built into performance pay. Balanced against promotion, control of sponsorship deals and tv rights.

Vastly improved usage of the stadium and facilities. This area would involve specialist event managers on part performance bonus salaries. Everything from car parks up would have to make money.
Japanese quality circles of rotation al customer need and service delivery survey command all levels of KPI based employment policy.

Aim = high performance at every level in every department delivering and exceeding customer expectation.

Mantra: All Win!

No negativity allowed in staff or structure at all.... get it right achieve the targets and reap the rewards.

It works everywhere in every business large and small. Those who knock not belong in the organisation or anywhere near it.

Bareing that in mind Coca Cola Lgue 1 doesn't seem so bad. Just hoping club is bought before it's too late. Don't forget Pinnacle paid clubs wages for a month with non refundable deposit, this may have allowed time for more interest to be generated in club.

Several individuals actually put in towards wages including Leon Crouch. Pinnacle paid a non refundable exclusivity fee at the end of which they couldn't come up with the money and pulled out. They said they would put in towards further wages but didn't.
Anyway that's well in the past now.

The fact that The Swiss Group have completed due diligence and now The Football League are doing the due diligence on their books if great. No way are Liebherr going to fail due diligence.

Keep the feet on the ground but everything is very optimistic at the moment and a little excitement is quite called for.

Hands up how many are going to Totton 7.45pm.... off you all go.. Only 1700 went to Eastleigh and the reports were really pleasing especially for the young guys playing in the second half.

Get in behind the Saints and have a look at the young fellas v Totton. If lots turn out it will give a real boost to Mark Wotte and show solidarity and appreciation to the new owners or bidders in there buying the club.

Let's hope a deal is done soon. I believe the basics are all settled but there will be creditors fighting to get as much of their money back as possible.

Companies like Barclays and Norwich Union do not let millions slip away lightly. I note that little if anything has been said about them. That's because they remain silent and the general public doesn't understand how the financing of clubs works on a day to day basis.

The public prefer focus on who the manager will be, is the new owner rich, and how soon will we be back in the Premiership. Fair enough and I'm as interested in those things as anyone else. However the creditors are the ones who can pull the plug on all of this, remember that Fry was appointed by them. If they are not happy with the selling price then it's all over and they will liquidate the club to try to retrieve their money.

I cannot see the club being worth much when the assets are broken down. That's why the bids are so low. So the problem is how much of hit are the creditors going to take. Much of the time delay is almost certainly Fry waiting for Barclays and Norwich Union to get back to him when they have been made an offer. Barclays, like all banks have a lot of problems of their own to sort out so will be very tough in the negotiations. They are not interested in teh clubs position, they are interested in repayment, so this could easily last another week or two.

The details of all that will not become fully public, even after the sale so its very frustrating for the fans. So the fans will continue pick on whoever is visible in the press and TV, or whose name they recognise, or whose name might rhyme with Lowe.

we have all this about assetts.
if the ground had been built three years ago its cost would have been between 50-60 million.
the outstanding amount on it was 24 million.
the holding company going into admin left creditors slashing what they wanted. Something is better than nothing. The deal had to be atttractive to investors.
taking the current market once tthe club is solvent the grounds worth will probably revert to around 34 million allowing for the recession. The training ground and farm are worth money. So the investors have a deal which will see them realise an investment profit immediately. with a market that is only going to go up. Given that a successful club base can be built. Then the vlaue will further increase. Otherwise why do you think so many people have got real interest in buying the club. Its rock bottom price make it very low risk.
they are not going to lose on their investment.even when they put money in they will see a good return when they sell the club in a few years. This is business. I have worked with people like this for many years. They will get the club to a solid status then look to sell it on i expect. For a very nice profit and get a very good return for what they have put in now and over the next couple of years.
That is the realism of it.

I agree with most of what Alicesdad has said although I will be surprised if Barclays have not already written down or off the Saints debt as part of getting their toxic debts off the books and set against their corporation tax. Norwich Union must unload the stadium - who else is going to buy it and what value has it stood empty? PG must have got an agreement with them both to get as far as they did so I see no reason why the Swiss bid wont get a deal. Whilst Barclays & NU will play hardball to recover as much as they can there comes a point when realism sets in, even for companies as big as these!

Surely all this would have been sorted out during due dilligence. What else have they been discussing all this time? Which pies to serve on match days???

Alicesdad, Chandler's Ford says...
10:46am Tue 7 Jul 09

If it had been "sorted out during due dilligence" the deal would have been done. New bidders = new deal so the creditors have to evaluate the new proposition. They may well eat a pie or two while discussing this.

Barclays might be wiling to write off £4 million - but I doubt it with a ground like St Marys and other land as an asset.

It's unlikely that a new owner will pay off all the debts, its more likely they will buy the club but refinance te debts and reschedule them. However the creditors will want to feel sure the new owners will be able to turn the club around and repay them in full.

If you think it will all be written off then you are naive ...remember this isn't a liquidation yet. The administrator is looking for a CVA. I'm not sure everyone appereciates exactly what that is. Google it if you don't know.

...it would be good if they did pay it all off though .. but although they are Swiss they don't live in cloud cuckoo land.
