Kelvin Davis snubs West Ham for new Southampton deal

Markus Liebherr’s bright new era at Saints has got off to the best possible start – by tying captain Kelvin Davis down to a new three year contract.

The Daily Echo can exclusively reveal that Davis has rejected a move to Premier League side West Ham in favour of extending his stay at St Mary’s.

Liebherr’s team wasted no time after their acquisition of the club in ensuring the reigning player of the season and crowd hero put pen to paper on a three year contract with his previous deal having expired at the end of June.

The signature laid down a marker of what is to come in Liebherr’s control of Saints.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Daily Echo, Nicola Cortese, the man responsible for selling Saints to Liebherr and then conducting the deal said: "He (Liebherr) is completely into it already, he is already looking forward to July 18 and the Ajax match when he will come and fly his friends in and take them round the stadium to show his new company to them.

"He is a very passionate person and if you can attract his passion about something he is 100 per cent passionate."

See today's Daily Echo for the exclusive interview with Nicola Cortese and more on the incredible news that Kelvin Davis is staying at Saints.

Hi Brissie.. Mark Wotte is on a rolling 12 month contract as manager. Why do you think Kelvin stuck it out so long?! He knew something would come along just waited and waited as long as he could like a true Saint would do.
He's a first class goal keeper with an immense level of ability, so at the end of this season coming you post on here again and say that Kelvin Davis is 'not that good anyway' when we're top of league one with a plus 60 goal difference.

Well I did see two live games. Barnsley and Derby, and those live TV games. The first two were shocking football games as neither teams were any good and a point per team was a joke as both deseved nil.As for the TV games you have to admit ROCKET fuel was needed to sit through those games. Cringeworthy to say the least. On the last subject it dosent matter if you lose by 1 or 5 once we were behind it was all over and to the bar for another.

Kelvin DAVIS was awesome for much of the last season and does not deserve some the crap thats been said here. Over the years we have had some very loyal players who are true saints , Le TISS , Nick HOLMES , Franny B to name a few and davis deserves some credit for joining the list . He was the linchpin last year. Yes he has made some howlers but dont all keepers , a a young nipper I remember watching Ivan KATALINIC drop most crosses and cost us a fair few games. I would like to put this scenario to you if Saints had been pushing for promotion last season with kelvin in goal, his phenominal performances would have been worth 4 or 5 points to us! We should build a bloomin' statue of the man outside the stadium! He has gone above and beyond the call of duty and it has been so refreshing to see a footballer with his priorities in the right order. Who'd have thought a few months after he signed and was attracting the ire of the crowd that Davis would go on to attain the status that he has in the hearts of the supporters?

Thank you Kelvin.

I would like to put this scenario to you if Saints had been pushing for promotion last season with kelvin in goal, his phenominal performances would have been worth 4 or 5 points to us! That is league wining form on its own merits. The fact that he hung in there for a new contract unitl the very last minute shows commitment to the cause. Are you Pompey in disguise?
No blue here I can assure you sue. I can still see KD sheparding the ball out when we played QPR then he got robbed and the striker rolled it in an empty net. Whos to say we wouldnt have got promoted that year when he also let it though his legs on quite a few occasions, some of thr softest goals ever seen. Mistakes are rubbish defence can ill afford me thinks.

bl**dy hell, there's always one, isn't there? Shut up you carping idiot. We've just had the best news we could have had, and, all right Kelvin isn't Gordon Banks or Peter Shilton, but he's one of the top half-dozen in Britain at present (better than David James, for sure) and he's prepared to reject a Premiership club for a Third Division outfit. What does that say about Saints? And what sort of message will it send to other players who might be on the shopping list? Thanks Markus, thanks Kelvin.
He`s not even ERIC MARTIN. Im not doubting his commitment to saints there seems no question about that. I saying he`s rubbish thats all. Pearson saw he was rubbish thas why he got Richard Wright in and saved us going down. The following year our Hero was in goal all year and we had the biggist minus goal difference ever. We conceded goals for fun and some of that is down to him.
I know you can say anything on here without any way of prooving it, but did you actually see any live games last year apart form a couple of drink fuelled games on tv. KD may not have stopped us losing many matches but we would have lost by double the margin in most. check out the OPTA stata (think that's what they're called
Well I did see two live games. Barnsley and Derby, and those live TV games. The first two were shocking football games as neither teams were any good and a point per team was a joke as both deseved nil.As for the TV games you have to admit ROCKET fuel was needed to sit through those games. This is more fab news after the takeover. In relation to some of the negative comments on here about Kelvin... well you're never going to please everyone in football all of the time. Even the best have their critics! As long as the vast majority are pleased that's a great indication of a quality player. Let is be noted then that the majority of saints fans welcome this excellent news as reflected by the positive comments on here which are in the majority. Thanks Kelvin for your loyalty.

I've never been able to get a season ticket for one reason or another but this coming season I'll be changing that. Lets all get down to SMS, pack it out and give Davis, Leibherr and the team an incredible reception for all the games and roar them on to success.

I have to say I was a bit emotional about the deal being completed. But this gives me just as much satisfaction simply because this proves what this club means to kelvin.Furthermore the people who have been critical of him seem to me not to have ever been to a saints match and probably just trying to wind up all of us proper supporters.Still wont allow them to change my happy mood because I for one think that given a couple of seasons and stability coupled with sensible spending that we will okay.

Lets be honest here,Kelvin doesn't command his box, sometimes looks really dodgey on crosses, having said that one on one in box I agree with you, not many better. He stayed because (in his words) his missus love's it down, his kids are settled. He didn't go the West Ham because he wouldn't get a game, in front of Robert Green I think not. I'm glad he is staying only because Bart looks even dodgier sometimes, and I have not seen enough of Forecast to comment, except to say, if he was better than Kelvin JP or MW would have picked him.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Keagan and Le Tiss involved in some way. After all Markus understands the importance of the fans and uniting them behind the club.

I have to admit that I was Kelvin's biggest critic 2 and 3 seasons ago. The mistake at St Mary's against QPR when trying to take on the attacker outside the box that resulted in a goal against us, laughable. Then there was the cross come shot in the Ted Bates memorial trophy against the Greek side that my 15 year old son would have been better positioned to deal with; but; Kelvin has learnt from his mistakes, done a lot of hard work and built up his confidence and quite deservedly so; won the fans player of the season last season. I am very pleased to learn that Kelvin (good on you son) Davis has signed a contract to end his playing days with our club that will allow him to play 1 full season in the Premiership with us. We are a fantastic club and it would appear we are also in very good hands, pardon the pun, I also feel very confident that my own fortunes are about to change, if so I will be purchasing a season ticket straight away.

I see mark Wotte told Mick McCarthy to take a flying leap offering only half a mil Good on him.

Shouldn't Surman have to play if he is on contract or is their some silly clause allowing this behaviour.

Because he not only had a fantastic season but he motivated and pushed the kids along and remained loyal to the club. He has obviously strung out the West Ham move for as long as he could to give the club every opportunity to keep him.

Moron. The fans voted him player of the year. Yes he is no Shilton or Niemi but then we arent the same club we were then.

Shilton came to the Dell on £2000 a week, the highest paid player in the country at that time.

People like you have no concept of what has happened, where we are and what we need to do to come back.

Over time, as we progress, we will become more attractive to better players and we can strengthen the team all over the pitch, until then lets recognise and respect those that stood by us and remember and wait for those that didn't.

Spot on mate. KD always made it clear that he didn't want to leave the club but like anyone else with a family he needs to make sure that he has a job so that he can earn a crust. Due to all the uncertainty during the takeover he was just ensuring that he could feed his family like anyone else on here would do. Surman's already been sold to Wolves for over £1m so you must mean Lallana.

He didn't refuse to play he asked not to play in a couple of games and has expressed an interest to move. The club can force him to play but if he is only concerned about not getting injured and his heart isn't in it then it is better to play someone else and keep him out.

He is in my opinion a better player than Surman and younger so we are definitely not going to accept anything less than £1m for him. More like £2m or £3m.

He has a lot to thank the Saints for though and is a local lad so I would be very disappointed in him if he really and truly wanted to go this year without helping us get out of this division.
