Saints fans delighted takeover is finally complete

SAINTS Independent Supporters Association chairman Mike O’Callaghan is thanking the Lord after Saints’ takeover saga finally came to an end.

"My first two thoughts are ‘hallelujah’ and thank god the soap opera is over," he smiled.

"This has been one soap opera and a half and I would rather not have to go through that again.

"It’s been an emotional roller-coaster but it’s been one with more lows than highs.

"I am really happy we have got a man coming to the club who has got a nice wedge in his back pocket."

While he said he didn’t know too much about Saints’ wealthy new owner Markus Liebherr, O’Callaghan was just happy that he had the money available to back up his wish to buy the club.

"The Pinnacle Group were talking the talk but they couldn’t walk the walk while the Swiss didn’t say too much publicly," he said.

"But they were men of actions and actions speak louder than words."

O’Callaghan first wish under Saints new ownership is to see manager Mark Wotte handed the money to bring in new players.

"The money is in the bank now for Mark Wotte to go and recruit some players that will get us nearer to the top of this division ASAP," he said.

And O’Callaghan will certainly be encouraged by the new owners pledge to "re-engage with the fans and the local community" and his belief that "we cannot succeed without their backing."

"Okay, thank you for saving the club but there is no club if there are not any fans," he said.

"So I hope the new owners will listen to the fans unlike Rupert Lowe," he said.

Saints Trust chairman Nick Illingsworth was equally relieved that a new owner for the club has been found and it’s future secured.

"Never has a football club the size of Saints in recent history really had to stare into the precipice," he said.

"We would do well to look at that and realise how close we were to falling in and there being no Southampton Football Club.

"I honestly feel we have got as good an owner coming in as we could have hoped for.

"This guy, from all accounts, seems to be a sensible and considered business-like person."

Illingsworth said he would like to see the club’s new owner set out a long-term plan for the club.

"What I want to see them do is come in and do a professional job," he said.

"I want to see an organised strategy and a long-term plan, not a short-term one.

"This close to the start of the season it’s very difficult to come in and make major changes."

He added: "Hopefully what we will see now is people going to the games with smiles on their faces again.

"It would be surprising if absolutely everyone flocked back and we saw 32,000 at St Mary’s.

"But if the new owners can see a core base of 20,000 supporters to build on then that’s immediately going to encourage them in their future planning.

"It’s all down to the supporters now and showing that we’re grateful to Markus Liebherr for coming in and saving the club and that we’re going to show that gratitude by supporting the club ourselves."

I hope that one of the first things Mr Liebherr will do for the fans is create a proper supporters club which would be run by club employees because in recent years we fans have had to put up with individuals claiming to represent the fans when they have absolutely no mandate.

im sorry but this spokespeople for the fans is BS, what these 2 say may be what a small percentage of the fans are thinking but what of the majority? Having spoke to this guy mike at st mary's yesterday afternoon, he is rude and from what I could gather, thinks very highly of himself. We dont need people like him talking for the fans and if ML is true to his work about bringing the club back to the fans and the community, do we really need people speaking on behalf us if the club is now listening?

Actually I hope they DON'T listen to the fans, we know nothing, listen to the professionals. If you listen to the fans, which fans do you listen to? The mouthy ones on internet message boards? Season ticket holders? I'm sure Herr Liebherr knows better than to listen to us numbskulls.

Sorry mate your wrong, Illingsworth is arrogant and doesn't speak for anyone else but himself, Mike aka Jim Steele is a good bloke who along with others try to be objective, sometimes he may come across as rude, but I know him well and can quite honestly say he's a decent bloke. I would rather he speak for supporters than the self opinionated Illingsworth (who works for the echo)

If Illingsworth works for the Echo then I`m even more surprised at him getting his images of fear and doom mixed up.... It should be staring into the Abyss, not staring into the precipice (a precipice is the cliff's edge, so really he should have said falling off the precipice... it doesn't quite sound very scary when you say staring at the cliff edge), not this:

"Never has a football club the size of Saints in recent history really had to stare into the precipice,"

A supporters club which appears to comprise four arrogant, loudmouths whose only aim is to tell others to shut up and in the meantime talk incessant rubbish.

At least Nick Illings worth can shut up and listen and in my experience is prepared to give others their say without continuous heckling.

There is no place for the likes of SISA and the trust is now redundant as the club is in private ownership.

A proper supporters club set up by the club and affiliated to the club is the way to go.

Quiet, intelligent people are needed to run it, not arrogant loudmouths.

The media should now stop talking to unrepresentative bodies and start going out and talking to the real grassroots supporters.

Illingworth could win the lottery and still stare in the Abyss. Even last night on the local news, he found a platform to spout his on opinions, and his worries. He is boring, dull and needs to go to a few away games.

Can I come over there to get away from Illingworths BS

I think your getting your people mixed up, Mcmillan and Chorley are the loudmouths, but they were right 5 years ago...they predicted administration then...if you knew anything about the SISA group you would know that not they are not all loudmouths, some are loyal supporters (home and away) who believed that the dark lord was going to ruin our club and wanted to inform others long before he came back...thank god that is didn't happen. As for the trust,I thought they were redundant anyway.
The idea behind the trust was to apply for government funding to buy the club which would have be possible had Illingworth listend when SISA suggested that, it was the only way forward. Fortunately ML came in and as they say the rest is history....

I sense some strong opinions on here and as a Saints fan who doesn't know which side to believe I can only surmise that maybe it is time for a new Supporters club with a different representative, or these other 2 guys should pass on the mantle to someone else.

A spokesperson shouldn't have strong views themselves they should speak to the members and gain opinion and from that.

I think it's unfortunate that the media choose such disappointing people to interview as fans and fans representitives when writing about or producing tv segments with regard to SFC.
Chorley,McMillan,Ill
ingsworth,Foley and this chap with "little man syndrome" Callaghan probably represent the views of less than 1% of the fan base. Therefore this would actually deem them unrepresentive.
I yearn for the day when a tv crew captures a Saints fan for a comment outside St.Marys who can actually string a proper sentence together without giving the impression that we are all morons.

Good to see the bickering has started all ready!

No individual can ever represent saints fans - as in the main fans just dont agree.

Four weeks ago given a straight choice most fans would have picked the Pinnacale Le Tis/ keegan deal. With hindsight thank (Le)god we didnt.

I shall now llok forward to some real football talk. Who we buy, who we sell etc etc for a club with a chairman I will no longer have to be ashamed of.

I don't know if even a truly democratic fans club would fairly represent fans' views.

After all our govt is elected - do they fairly represent us?

I hope the new owners talk to a wide range of supporters and then make their own decisions... the fans are never going to agree 100% on any issue. This chap has put in his own money - ultimately its his decision how he spends it, but of course he'd be nuts to completely ignore the views of his customers (the fans) just like any other business.

It's up to the fans to find a common ground and support the team on the field leaving club politics, selection choices etc well away from the players and the stadia.

Passions cause upheaval and often division. Personalities can ruffle feathers and upset.

I know during the last few weeks I had a heart felt search for my roots in Southampton and came out with this little story..

Any one of any age should find their story, think about it and do the one thing that matters to a Saints Fan.. get to the stadia and scream as loud as you can for Saints because it is in your blood.

I once were a nipper from Graham Road
Just a poor kid livin in Nans abode
Since Queen Vic were alive Great Gran lived next door
She took in washin and scrubbed on the floor
Gran Pop was Navy back in great war days
“e won lots of medals me uncles gottem t'day
A tug-master he was through the Second World War
In the blitz Mum huddled behind church door
Old Pop played the organ when the soldiers came home
At Saint Mary’ s church then under St. Paul’s Dome
It was 'ard down Mount Pleasant in them days
We bust stuff for fun then runned away.
The boys club was good it taught us ta fight
But it weren't too rough old skip kept it right
I ran the line up the Dell on a few nights
Selling the programmes under the lights
I loved the roar as Ron nutted anuvva
and ran like hell as Mancs tried to give bovva
Most teds had a flick knife or a sharpened up comb
Didn’t keep us away from the Dell we called home
We still got smacked over if we wore the wrong jeans
When skin'eads chased us and called us all queens
I were a Saints fan and took a few smackings
We loved our team, never thought of it's lackings
"Oh When The Saints" me Nan said to sing
As Pop's organ playing round home it would ring
We shifted to Swaythling then Bitterne neat
Just as The Beatles parted their beat
Now just a mem'ry playing in my mind
I live in New Zealand my hearts still behind
I came back in '01 and drove into town
I cried by the Itchen as the Dell was torn down
The Floating Bridge gone and The Royal Pier just ash
The old bathes and lido memories to dash
I got pea fritters and parked by Merry Oak School
A guy came out thinking I was a fool
Don't leave yer car there they'll tear it apart
That big old pipe organ still plays in my heart
Now I sit in this land so far and so distant
Home memories recalled in just an instant
I still hear my Nan cheering by the telly
As her budgie cackled; phew that bird was smelly!
She loved the wrestling Jacky Pallow and co
But the Saints were her passion she told me so
Only she knew that I went up the Dell
I’d get in trouble if my mum she did tell
Years later they’ve gone, Pop Nan and more
I thought of them as we waited to learn what’s in store
For the mighty football club we love and adore
This moosh from St Marys had his heart in hand
Asking where are the rich fans with a few Mil to stand
Have you no memories; could you have you forgotten
And I thought this just isn't happening; it feels so rotten
Then hope was given but no money was brought
All our dreams were broken and hopes came to naught
When all seemed lost and our Club was to die
Along came a hero in a grey suit and tie
No cross-bow bolt from our William Tell
No promises made not a shout or a yell
An investment made, an honest deal done
Markus Liebherr became Southampton’s son
We give him our hearts as he gives us his might
Now all of the South, will hear our cry
As fans find their passion for Saints we will die
Southampton FC is rising to fight
Again we roar for our Red and White

Red and white red and white
Swiss and Saints Red and White!

The wearing of a new formal attire on Saturday's. This will consist of genuine Leder-Hausen. C/W Tyrolion hat & feather. Leather buckled shoes. Long walking socks. All Saint's fans will stand & dance O the signal of the Alpen horn. At the half time interval, a yoddleing contest will held for the "new faithful."

McMillan, ive been watching Saints for 40 years and this loony lefty wasnt on the scene then, who is he?

Foley, a very loyal football fan, has good things to say and would be a good asset to the club IMO. Bring back Foleys coaches.

So, as far as im concerned, 75% of these so called saints fans are cretins with NOTHING to say

Completely agree, but the supporters need to have a real say in how the club is run, no matter who owns it. With all due respect to the new owners of course.

It would have been the fans who would have lost out the most if liquidation had happened.

And it is quite clear from some of the posts here that many fans are not the "numbskulls" referenced by one poster at the top of the article. Do not tar all fans with the same black brush.

Southampton Supporters Assc is weak an weak and weak again. What do they actually do? Or achieve? The only supporters club you need is at ST Maty's on match day or on the bus to away games.
