St Mary's to host Rugby World Cup matches

ST MARY’S will host some of the 2015 Rugby World Cup matches, after England was chosen to stage the event.

The International Rugby Board announced their decision this afternoon, with England beating off competition from South Africa and Italy.

As exclusively revealed by the Daily Echo in May, St Mary’s was on the list of stadiums that would hold matches if England’s bid was successful.

Saints’ home will now be one of 12 used for the tournament and will host south region pool matches in the 2015 event.

great, the pitch will be in no fit state for football, especially as this World Cup usually takes place in the autumn. Is it really worth it for Fiji v Romania or something like that?

I think you're being a little unfair. I believe it is an honour that our ground has been deemed fit for a RWC fixture, regardless of whom it involves. I for one will be trying to get a ticket; evidently I won't see you there!

Its Sir Clive Woodward getting revenge on you

Lovely, a bunch of egg chasers turning the pitch into cow field. Pop concerts, and now rugby, what ever next, a temporary ice rink?

Clive Woodward is nothing to do with rugby these days. He's currently the head of 'elite competition' for team GB ahead of the next Olympics.

As for St Mary's being used for rugby, I don't mind so long as they give the seats a jolly good clean afterwards. Those rugby fans are little better than animals, with their 'real' 'ale' and waxed jackets and reactionary opinions*.

*Unless, of course, you're Welsh, in which case it's perfectly acceptable to like rugby.

I hope they don't get any of last seasons Saints players to take any penalties.

miserable sods...this'll bring in a lot of money for the club.....I know, I know, we're all still sore that Pompey's supposed new ground is going to be part of the football bid....but seriously

No, you never find any reactionaries at football matches do you?

For instance, when was the last time anyone heard racism at a Saints game? Must have been way back in ... let me see now ... last May? And I'm not just referring to the execrable, puerile, pathetic and seriously tired anti-Pompey version of Que Sera, Sera.

As for real ale: yes please! What you lager-mugs see in ersatz foreign beers that are rarely as good as the originals (unless they are flogged under Australian or American trademarks – in which case they’re slightly better), which in turn compare badly in terms of taste body and, invariably , strength, to our own traditional beers, is mystifying.

Still, I have to admit that – while I applaud the fact St Mary’s will be hosting World Cup Rugby Union – there is something fundamentally un-British about picking the ball up in a game of football, and we must thank the founding fathers of the Football Association for adopting the footballing philosophies of Eton and Harrow, rather than that of Rugby School.

It would be if we had any significant history of rugby in the city. There are no clubs on note, even in Hampshire and no heritage either. It was just a money making ploy from Lowe.

I was at the Ajax game and there were 5 guys behind me smoking and snorting cocaine. It will be a blessing to have rugby fans at SMS!

A complete and utter waste of time. Not a proper sport, and with no history here. We'll take your money, but nobody gives a flying really.

spot on, I'd never met anyone who liked rugby until I went to Uni. In fact, someone on my course remarked how he was in the Cowherds once and asked if anyone knew the 'score' and people told him the Saints result. It's a west country game, Southampton is a football city.

What a tool.

How on earth is this a money-making 'ploy' from Lowe?

1. Lowe is not involved in SFC any more.
2. If it makes money for SFC, then great!
3. Who cares if you think that there is no significant history of rugby in the city. London Irish play at the Madejski Stadium, which is a half-decent stadium don't you think? Something of an honour then for a non-rugby stadium to be awarded World Cup status.

There are a number of amateur rugby clubs in Southampton, and surrounding areas. Whilst the supporters attending individual matches can't compete with SFC, I wouldn't mind betting that there are as many rugby fans as football within Hampshire.

I think it's great news for Southampton and for SFC, and regardless of who is playing, I'll be buying tickets.

Right, that's enough rugby. The bottom line is that if it makes money then marvellous.

What I want to know is this: is it possible to make a full first 11 fantasy football team filled entirely with ex-Southampton players who are now in the premiership? It's not just a question of finding 11 players, but of making sure you have enough players for defence, midfield and attack in whichever formation you choose.

I am delighted that the RWC is coming to St. Marys and will be definitely watching the games whatever teams are playing. I could be anyone the All Blacks played their group games at Huddersfield in the 1999 RWC.
As for no history of rugby in Southampton I beg to differ.
There are many clubs about the area playing rugby up to London league levels and my club Trojans FC est 1874 even predates Southampton FC by 11 years.

Fantastic News! I watch Saints and Bath Rugby and encourage anyone who has not gone to watch rugby before to do so. Nothing better than sinking a few pints during the game without being told to get back in the concourse if you want to drink!
It makes a change from watching a bunch of players throwing themselves around like babies too!

I agree with it all accept there are not as many rugby fans as football fans in Hampshire. I see one rugby shirt to every 300 football shirts a day probably!

Well Condor Man had one point right, and that is we have no Premiership or National League 1 teams in Hampshire, which is why you won't see many club shirts being worn. However, I assure you that there are a lot of rugby fans out there in Hampshire!

As a former army rugby player, I would like to point out to you that football has always been girls game, the comment I made regarding egg chasing was tongue in cheek, I don't suppose you will mind going to see Saints play football on a cow field then, I'm sure if the ball hits a bobble and ends up in the back of our net you will not moan about it.

As regards the SMS pitch, most of you seem unaware that Reading and London Irish have been sharing the Madejski Stadium for the last 9 years. Haven't heard any complaints about the standard of their pitch. Besides, do you actually need a quality pitch to host the likes of Stockport and Hartlepool? My worry would be that teams like that would ruin the pitch for the rugby.

Stiofan says...

We not only have a number of Rugby Union teams in Southampton and surrounding areas, we also have a Rugby League team called Southampton Spitfires.

It is going to be great having Rugby World Cup matches being played here in Southampton, a definite boost for the City as we get lots of tourists coming here.
