Lambert more than a match for Beckford

Two months ago he was the subject of million pound speculation after netting the winner in Leeds’ sensational FA Cup third round victory at Old Trafford.

For many Saints fans, the visit of second placed Leeds to St Mary’s this weekend will be their first sighting of Beckford in the flesh.

Unlike when Lambert has gone up against another of League One’s hotshots, Grant Holt of Norwich, there is a massive difference in their game.

Beckford is all about all pace and playing on the shoulder of the last defender.

Lambert, like Holt, is a target man who scores goals but offers a lot more in terms of his all round performance.

It is because of that pace that Beckford has attracted the attentions of top flight clubs.

But Saints will be quite happy that Lambert has not courted such publicity or attention from elsewhere, despite an equally impressive record – and arguably a more rounded game.

A quick look at their stats this season underlines the differences in their games and the one major similarity.

That similarity is that they are both prolific scorers, having each netted 27 times in all competitions already this season.

Beckford, who scored twice on Tuesday in Leeds’ 4-1 romp at Tranmere, has made 41 starts in all competitions – four less than Lambert.

But the other statistics gathered by the Daily Echo shows an interesting difference.

Firstly, Lambert’s value to the team as a fulcrum for the attack is underlined by the fact he has provided 17 assists for others to score.

That compares very favourably to Beckford, who has just six assists.

Beckford has also taken a lot more shots for his goals – having had 91 shots on target and 73 off target compared to Lambert’s 72 and 64 respectively.

Although we lost the away leg at Leeds, Beckford was a total flop, in fact he got major boos when substituted with 20 mins to go. I just hope we approach the game in a much more positive frame than the tentative defensive display that day. We're a different proposition since Christmas, though.

Lambert may not have the pace of Beckford, but a far stronger, all round unselfish player!!!!
If Lambert was a year or two younger he would be worth double the amount Beckford attracts!

Quality, I keep hearing about how poor Beckford was at Elland Road, how many did Lambert get that day ? Or more to the point how many did the entire Saints 1st team get that day ?

They are both quality strikers and both at the head of the scoring charts by rights. These days football is all about pace which is why the higher league teams are interested in Beckford.

Throw in Barney's tuppence worth in there.. and David Connolly coming off the bench add Punch and Adam
I think we are more potent by far and they'll be seriously worried.

Hamma and Morg will do the biz in the mid with steady workmanship.

Then there's No Way thru Jose and our Jedi Knight Radhi Jaidi.. Rocks

The outside backs and Kelv all solid.

I'm up for a 4-2 Saints with you lot getting a great treat at SMS.

I'll look forward to hearing your lovely singing voices. Please get the Alan Pardew's Red Army Chant going as the team come out and keep it going ..the lads always seem to lift to it.

After Leeds 4-1 win at the ground we lost at 3 days earlier, I think were getting a little bit over confident. One things for sure, the quality will be well above League 1 standard and im looking forward to it.

Regarding Lambo, I'm a bit concerned of the attention he'll be getting in the summer.

I agree on all your points. I think this summer will be all about keeping the quality we have and adding one or two more. Sadly there will also be decisions to make about the injury prone. I'd love Murty and Connoly to to get fully fit but in all honesty I doubt that will happen. So there will be pressure on Pards to make tough decisions on who to keep.

The game should be good, I don think it will be high scoring but I really hope we take the 3 points. Im hoping that the 76 point target was too high and maybe we could grab 5th or 6th place maybe with 72 or 73 points, which is still possible with our fixture list.

Saints fans are blessed with more than their fair share of faith !!

Sounds like it but I'm one who can honestly say we are exactly where I thought we'd be.. It's not over confidence it's belief, faith and a big dose of true optimism.

No one can say this team doesn't have the ability on a decent track to play good football.

When you stack the players one on one our lads have the ability to handle Leeds. We do however need to step up and prove it.

As for our ability against the lesser teams that must be on Pards clip board as a task as yet unticked.

I do think this game will be a tingler.. if you can find my nerves cowering in the corner of my brain and ask if they are over confident they'll giggle a lot and deny it.

Apparently Leeds didn't need any excuses at Tranmere , like, rubbish ref, poor pitch, missed chances blah blah blah.
Unlike AP I am gutted that we won’t make the playoffs. The reason, we will now face speculation about some of our best players. I am worried we might not be able to avoid having to sell. Lets face it, if a player wants to leave, what choice do you have, none. This could and probably will delay the so called 5 year plan. This could break up the team and we will be back to square one.

Another season in this rubbish league, its div 3 for pities sake, playing on mud at the likes of Yeovil, Hartlepool, and probably Rochadale and Bournemouth, doesn't appeal to me. Even with the ten point disadvantage, you can look at recent games and see that we have thrown away opportunities to make up points on the top six. I would take 6 points in exchange for the Tin Pot Cup. Playing at Wembley has been devalued. It’s no longer the once in a lifetime experience it used to be. ££££s mean more than the occasion now. You can get to the FA Cup semi final and play at Wembley. The magic of playing at the national stadium was all about the tradition and history of the competition, that’s now disappeared for ever in exchange for £££££££.

I still cling on to the hope that we can scrape into the top six, two home games coming up, we have to get six points. Lets hope the JPT isn’t a distraction and we can push on up the league, not going up this season could have far reaching implications. COYR

It seems that his "pumped up " reputation served leeds well, until the bubble burst, he is pacy but positional play looks pretty average to me, even in the championship I think he will struggle, lambert wouldnt, case closed.
Lets not forget barnard who like lambert is improving with every game

Best thing to do then, buy him in the summer and see how he does!!.

Interesting post, dead right about the tranmere result, bad points to drop without any doubt, and if leeds can do it we should, but I dont think any player will be leaving just yet, your right in assuming if they ask to go they will, but surely they signed with a veiw to going up next season .
Until the playoffs are mathematically dead there not, worth clinging on to with one eye on next season.
I dont think not making the play offs with have any great implications at the moment, the majority of saints fans saw that as the icing on the cake not the candles.

How much bigger should the Wembley thing be?, nearly 50,000 Saints supporters think it is big, why don't you? This kind of snobbery is out of order, we cannot all be Manchester Uniteds, no matter how enthusiastic we are about the Club. We are at a level where this game is the best we can hope for, yes we would all like the return of the big time, that won't happen overnight. If you don't support the Club at whatever level it is competing at, how can you call yourself a real fan?
By that I mean Academy, Reserves, the lot, not just the first team XI.

OK. despite the apparent "triviality" of the JPT., I am going to have a great day out on the 28th March whatever you say about. If we win I am going to be a wee bit happy if that is all right. Then perhaps concentrate on a decent position in Division One, the higher the better, and don't tell me the JPT was responsible for us missing the play-offs, the Ten Point deduction had a little more to do with it..

So I take it you didn't get a ticket to the final then.
I said at start of the season a mid-table finish is more realistic than the play-offs it was too many targets set in one season first get rid of the minus 10 points then get out of the bottom 3 then mid table then play-offs. I can't see us selling many players this summer either and usually I'm very negative but I think the players will understand the situation and try and get us promoted next season after England have won the world cup :0) imagine that get some silverware this season at wembley,England win world cup then saints up as champions next year dreams can come true keep the faith COYR!!!!

Does anyone believe Pardew said to any player signing for us this season,
" We are going up, next year we are in the Championship"?.
If so you are deluded.
The difference between the top and bottom leagues is the consistency of the players. Hence Tranmeres last 2 results.
If you think we are going to make 10 million selling our players in the summer, think again.
I seem to remember Pardew did not mention any thing about play-offs till after Xmas.
Even then he probably knew we would finish 3 or 4 points short which is the likely scenario.
Everyone should keep a near grip on reality.
Remember Surman, everyone thought he was great, Where is he now ?.
IMO we have 4 players who could possibly play at Premier League level,
but lets see them in the Championship first.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! What a thoroughly depressing life you must lead if that is your standpoint on Saints' situation. Back to square 1??? Are you serious!! do you think in the summer we are going to be without an owner and back in administration with just our youth squad for players??
And how would it delay the 5 year plan?? IT IS PART OF IT! the 5 year plan is consolidate year 1, go up year 2 and have 3 years to get promoted to the Premiership!

Seriously you need to sort it out! Promotion this year would be great and reduce our 5 year plan to a 3 or 4 year plan but if we don't make it we are still on course for the original 5 year deal!

I also wouldn't worry about players leaving in the Summer, sure one or 2 may leave but there are quite a few good football players around, we managed to find some gems last summer and in January, there is no reason why we can't find more in the summer again!

Some people need to chill out!

Lets hope the JPT isn’t a distraction and we can push on up the league, not going up this season could have far reaching implications. COYR
I woke up this morning feeling quite chipper, looking forward to a great day out at Wembley, a good position in the league, and good prospects for next season, then I read this post and have lost the will to live, if this is is the best we can hope for, it would be better to go and support someone else. What a depressing tale.
At least now its two steps forward (5-1 and 5-0) and one back (2-1 loss) rather than one forward and two back!

We are all getting jittery because, lets face it, we haven't had it this good for years!

Lets just keep our nerve and take one game at a time. Wembley may be a distraction to some, it may be a dream come true to others. I have lived here for 10 years and have waited for this day to come!

It is still mathematically possible so until it isn't keep the faith!

I assume you haven't got a ticket for the Paint game?

If you have, might I suggest you do the honourable thing and sell it to one of the many thousands of fans (at face value) who want an enjoyable day out. There are many "happier" fans who haven't been able to get a ticket due to demand.

While you're at it, may I also suggest you don a green and yellow scarf and hunt your glory supporting Man Utd, it might make you happier. I and many other fans are more than happy with the massive steps forward we've made this season.

Also... if you want to make pointless comparisons, Leeds drew 2-2 at home against hudersfield a few weeks ago! Make of that what you will.

off topic,
was playing a round of golf today, one of the guys was about to chip onto a green when a funeral cortege passed by, he stopped mid-swing made the sign of the cross and bowed his head, some one said to him that was the most amazing thing they had ever seen, the guy played his shot to within 3 foot of the pin looked up and said after 35 years of marriage it was the least he could do,

I was at Elland Rd for that game and to be honest Leeds just about deserved to win, although we could have nicked it right at the death. It was a game of few chances and strong defending and if my memory serves me right Leeds most impressive player was Snodgrass on the left..he looks a quality player. Also they have a strong spine with big strong guys playing at CB and CM,so i reckon we`re in for a toughie. If Morgan and Deano can control the midfield,it will open up the game for our attacking players to do the business,it`s the same every game,it`s all about us dominating the centre mid and rest takes care of itself. As for who`s the best ..well i reckon both could do a good job in the championship but the premierleague is stratosphere`s above everthing else which shows why players like Ebanks Blake and Jason Scotland who scored for fun in the championship cant score for love nor money in the premier league.
