Dan Harding scored against his former club to give Saints a terrific 1-0 win over Leeds.
Almost 31,000 fans crammed into St Mary’s to watch Alan Pardew’s side defeat second-placed Leeds with the scoreline not reflecting Saints’ dominance throughout the game.
Results elsewhere mean that Saints remain 16 points off the play-offs with a game in hand but with increased confidence ahead of the visit of sixth-placed Swindon on Tuesday night.
Gary McSheffrey had the first shot of the game after just a minute but from 25 yards out he dragged it wide.
Up the other end Rickie Lambert had his first effort a minute later but leaning backwards to reach Dean Hammond’s chipped cross he directed it off target.
Jason Puncheon tried an audacious shot from just inside the area on five minutes, curling it just wide with the outside of his left boot after a forceful run and incisive pass from Adam Lallana.
It was an exciting start to the game with both teams getting the ball down and passing it around at tempo and quality that belied the division they are competing in.
McSheffrey continued the action by firing in a fierce free kick that was going to trouble Kelvin Davis before it was inadvertently blocked by his own player, Luciano Bechhio, on the edge of the six-yard box.
Radhi Jaidi had a chance when he was picked out unmarked by Jon Otsemboor’s deep free kick on 11 minutes but put his header over.
Up the other end Jermaine Beckford fired in a shot from 25 yards that whistled just wide.
Hammond extended Kasper Ankergren for the first time on 15 minutes with a low shot drilled straight down the middle that the Leeds keeper could only parry with Patrick Kisnorbo just edging it away from Lallana following in for the rebound.
Saints were forced into their first change moments later when Otsemobor limped off to be replaced at right back by Wayne Thomas.
Hammond was in the thick of the action again on 17 minutes as he fired over from the edge of the area after Puncheon’s cut back.
Puncheon came even closer himself on 19 minutes when he cut in from the right and shot from 20 yards left footed. His low effort beat Ankergren but clipped the outside of the post.
But there was no stopping Saints when they took the lead on 25 minutes.
A left wing cross came to Lambert at the far post, he managed to get it down, turn and cut it back to Puncheon.
The winger scuffed his shot but that turned it into something of a cross into the centre of the six-yard box where Dan Harding was all alone to provide a simple finish for 1-0.
Barnard tried to add another on 32 minutes but his half volley fired off the head of Kisnorbo and over.
Saints did think they had doubled their lead a minute later as Jaidi turned home a corner in a collapsing melee of players at the near post but the referee disallowed it for a foul.
Saints then should have got another goal on 35 minutes as another scramble in the Leeds box saw the ball fall to Barnard but from just a few yards out he could only hit it against the diving body of Aidan White back on the line who blocked it.
There was just as good an opening three minutes later as Puncheon’s chipped cross from the right picked out Lallana with a free header in the centre of goal six yards out but he put it over.
Saints were furious with referee Peter Walton as he failed to blow up when Barnard looked like getting through on goal before a clash with Richard Naylor then Jonathan Howson was the first man in the book for a foul on Lallana.
When the half-time whistle went Saints led 1-0 having played some fantastic stuff and created some great chances but knowing they should have had more goals.
Leeds made a switch at half-time to try and get themselves back into the game with Leigh Bromby coming on for White.
The second half started unsurprisingly more subdued.
Saints still looked in control for the most part but Leeds were more compact and defending better.
Kisnorbo picked up a booking for a foul on Lambert as the referee came in for more stick while Puncheon followed him not long afterwards.
Leeds made a second change on 63 minutes with Neil Kilkenny coming on for McSheffrey.
Saints were doing a good job in the second half.
The game was not at all open like the first half with neither side getting a sustained spell of pressure and even half chances proving hard to come by.
But with a lead to protect Saints were ensuring Leeds never got a firm foothold in the game and always remained a threat themselves.
Pardew decided to introduce the threat of some pace on the break when Papa Waigo replaced Barnard on 72 minutes.
Leeds responded with their final change five minutes later with Max Gradel on for Becchio. Gradel got booked almost instantly for a challenge on Harding.
With ten minutes remaining and still only one goal in the game Saints must have been bracing themselves for a sustained spell of pressure from Leeds as they desperately hunted for a goal to get something from the game.
But it was Saints who were so lively on the break with Waigo testing Ankergren with a low shot from 20 yards.
When the fourth official held up the board it showed a minimum of five minutes of added time.
In fairness to Saints they had done a great job up until that point of strangling the game and were certainly not holding on.
They may have been slightly worried when Robert Snodgrass took aim from 25 yards but his shot whistled just wide.
That proved to be Leeds’ last foray and Saints took a well deserved and impressive three points from the game.

Isn't this the beauty of this forum - you can read all the comments and agree with almost all of them! Then when it comes to making comment all I can say is - Agree with everything that's already been said especially the Ref - AWFUL! . Saints team - SUPERB! . Puncheon, Fonte, Lallana, Lambert, Barnard - DIFFERENT CLASS! My boy Dan - SOLID as ever - great contribution again and good goal - wonder what AP said to him after tranmere?? . NC says we do not need to sell next year so it's a build and push season if we miss out this year. Oh, and they didn't spend all that money in the transfer season just to go for JPT or FA Cup!! . Joy to watch the team today and great chants from Northam today - well done lads - C'mon Swindon . COYRS!!!!!!! Future's bright - Futures Red & White!

Quite tense in the Chapel today, mainly due to the ref and his poor decision making. I was sure he was gong to give them something. 5 minutes injury time, where did that come from. Thought Saints were great bit still room for improvement. Barny started to go to ground too much second half. I also thought Jason ran out of steam 2nd half. Needs to pass it more or get the ball in quicker. Jaidi was a god today. Had a Leeds fan to right and behind today (in the Chapel). Also 31,000 today well done guys. One team in Hampshire!!

What a difference Jaidi and Fonte were so good it gave Davis an afternoon off Thomas never put a foot wrong when he replaced semi and Dan the man once again For me he will be a top contender for man of the season
Being ultra ctritical I think Hammond and Morgan have a better understanding and are a bit tougher than Adam and Puncheon
Rickyand Barny got pushed shove kicked and elbowed all afternoon and never complained
Leeds are one of the dirtiest sides in the league and Becky is a big girly CHEAT who could so easily have been boked three times for diving
Everton will be making a big mistake if they signe him
As Pards said we now need to become consistant Can we make a play-off ? Probably not but I wont give up hoping until its mathamatically impossible

Looking at traffic problems and infrastructure including the location of the stadium... if the council can't handle extended capacity at SMS maybe we'll see a new stadium in a place where traffic will be a lesser problem. Davis - A very typical Dracula performance. Looks completely solid when he ball flies down his throat, but flaps like a budgie in all other circumstances. Luckily he didn't have too much to do today, but Saints hearts are always in their mouths when the ball goes anywhere near him. 5/10.
Otsemobor - Looked fairly good until he had to go off. From my seat in the Kingsland, I have no idea why he was subbed. 6/10.
Fonte - Quality. Never looked under any pressure. 8/10.
Jaidi - He still looks like commiting a foul every time he competes for a ball, but had a solid game today. 7/10
Harding - Pretty solid in defence, hopeless in attack, but bizarrely scored the winner. 6/10.
Puncheon - For the first 70 minutes, Jason played wide right, but, as a left footer, needs to constantly cut inside to have an effect. With 20 minutes to go Parfoot finally grasped what we have all known for nearly a month, and swapped wingers. Puncheon will be a revelation now he is being played in the correct position. 8/10.
Hammond - Standard stuff. Reminds me very much of Jim Magilton at his worst. Will never pass forwards if there is a sideways pass available. 6/10.
Schneiderlin - Quality. Genius. Fantastic technique. 8/10.
Lallana - Once Parfoot moved him to the right wing after 70 minutes Adam started playing as we all know he can. Since the Pompey game, Lallana's commmitment and defensive abilities have really come to the fore. Great game today. 8/10.
Lambert - A bit quiet by his standards. Won plenty in the air again, but badly needs a rest. 6/10.
Barnard - Infuriating today. He has all the striking attributes that we have needed all season, and started the game looking sharp, and set for more goals. However, he spent the whole of he first half either falling over or whining at the ref. It is true that the ref gave very little in his favour, but all hetrosexual males know how much effort it takes to stand up, and Brnard was going down far too easily. 7/10.
Thomas - Another solid performance. Wayne usually looks a bit like a centre-back playing at full-back, but today he was overlapping regularly. 7/10.
Papa Waigo - I have no idea what he was up to, and I doubt whether he does either. More effective than the little mascot that played against Huddersfield though. 6/10.

If you watch again you see Dan Seaborne punch the Tranny in his kidney with his left little finger, causing momentary paralysis! Another quality spot by the official!

Great result. We looked good and made leeds look bad! Jaidi and Fonte were massive. Never seen more team determination to secure a result. Kelvin was not required to do anything but he did it well.(nice beard) Ref was crap and got abused for good reason. AP's Red Army chant was huge and even the middle Kingsland made an effort. Why do I always end up sitting next to a Bloody Expert. Earache from the Left of me and garlic breath from the right! Stuck in the middle with me! Just seen our disallowed 'goal'. If ever proof was needed that the 'goal' was good and that no Saints player had committed a foul, just look at the reactions from the Leeds players. None of them even appealed for a free kick whilst the player who had been marking Jaidi just sat on the floor. In fact the only player asking for a free kick was Fonte, after he had been pulled down for a penalty!!! Confirms for me that the ref was a t0sser.

What scared me the most was they seemed to be talking to each other. Tell the truth I aint got a problem with the big boy(Guinea Pig) We had a word and fixed beady eyes! He new he had met his match and agreed to Zip it!! My problem were the Hampsters!! Never got to see them as they would not come out of their "Disneyworld Environment" Kicked the cage gently every five minutes in the hope that they might shut the f,,k up! Hampster Pie Rules!!!!! Sorry I missed you Bill. Next time;-) COYRAWAPMACHINE!!!!slugger wrote:Harley....I should have warned you about the "rodent room" at Slugger's. Judging by the noise they make when I kip there, they're digging an escape tunnel!! :O)Harleysaint wrote: Great result. Cheers for the bed slugger and now monkjack is off the menu. Guinee Pig and Hampster are going to be my new favourites if I stay again.Should have slept in the attic!! LOL ;-) Can someone get in touch with Swindon and tell them to start loosing!!! COYRAWAPMACHINE!!!!no probs.....good day was had by all,i did warn you about the zoo room mate !

Costa Baz wrote: Just seen our disallowed 'goal'. Confirms for me that the ref was a t0sser.Baz!! When your right your right! Would so love to make the "PLAYOFFS" this year. If it happens Perfect. If it doesn't good anyway. I am 55years of age and know we will be back in "THE PREMIERSHIP" BEFORE i'm 60!! ;-0 How good will we become? Thats what its all about Mush!! Who knows? Keep the faith and enjoy living in hope!!!! However you must be allowed to have your opinions and I cannot see any cause for abuse towards you or from your goodself to others, I think we are all on the same wavelength?
7/10 Harding - Pretty solid in defence, hopeless in attack, but bizarrely scored the winner. 6/10.
