Dan's the man as Saints KO Leeds

Dan Harding scored against his former club to give Saints a terrific 1-0 win over Leeds.

Almost 31,000 fans crammed into St Mary’s to watch Alan Pardew’s side defeat second-placed Leeds with the scoreline not reflecting Saints’ dominance throughout the game.

Results elsewhere mean that Saints remain 16 points off the play-offs with a game in hand but with increased confidence ahead of the visit of sixth-placed Swindon on Tuesday night.

Gary McSheffrey had the first shot of the game after just a minute but from 25 yards out he dragged it wide.

Up the other end Rickie Lambert had his first effort a minute later but leaning backwards to reach Dean Hammond’s chipped cross he directed it off target.

Jason Puncheon tried an audacious shot from just inside the area on five minutes, curling it just wide with the outside of his left boot after a forceful run and incisive pass from Adam Lallana.

It was an exciting start to the game with both teams getting the ball down and passing it around at tempo and quality that belied the division they are competing in.

McSheffrey continued the action by firing in a fierce free kick that was going to trouble Kelvin Davis before it was inadvertently blocked by his own player, Luciano Bechhio, on the edge of the six-yard box.

Radhi Jaidi had a chance when he was picked out unmarked by Jon Otsemboor’s deep free kick on 11 minutes but put his header over.

Up the other end Jermaine Beckford fired in a shot from 25 yards that whistled just wide.

Hammond extended Kasper Ankergren for the first time on 15 minutes with a low shot drilled straight down the middle that the Leeds keeper could only parry with Patrick Kisnorbo just edging it away from Lallana following in for the rebound.

Saints were forced into their first change moments later when Otsemobor limped off to be replaced at right back by Wayne Thomas.

Hammond was in the thick of the action again on 17 minutes as he fired over from the edge of the area after Puncheon’s cut back.

Puncheon came even closer himself on 19 minutes when he cut in from the right and shot from 20 yards left footed. His low effort beat Ankergren but clipped the outside of the post.

But there was no stopping Saints when they took the lead on 25 minutes.

A left wing cross came to Lambert at the far post, he managed to get it down, turn and cut it back to Puncheon.

The winger scuffed his shot but that turned it into something of a cross into the centre of the six-yard box where Dan Harding was all alone to provide a simple finish for 1-0.

Barnard tried to add another on 32 minutes but his half volley fired off the head of Kisnorbo and over.

Saints did think they had doubled their lead a minute later as Jaidi turned home a corner in a collapsing melee of players at the near post but the referee disallowed it for a foul.

Saints then should have got another goal on 35 minutes as another scramble in the Leeds box saw the ball fall to Barnard but from just a few yards out he could only hit it against the diving body of Aidan White back on the line who blocked it.

There was just as good an opening three minutes later as Puncheon’s chipped cross from the right picked out Lallana with a free header in the centre of goal six yards out but he put it over.

Saints were furious with referee Peter Walton as he failed to blow up when Barnard looked like getting through on goal before a clash with Richard Naylor then Jonathan Howson was the first man in the book for a foul on Lallana.

When the half-time whistle went Saints led 1-0 having played some fantastic stuff and created some great chances but knowing they should have had more goals.

Leeds made a switch at half-time to try and get themselves back into the game with Leigh Bromby coming on for White.

The second half started unsurprisingly more subdued.

Saints still looked in control for the most part but Leeds were more compact and defending better.

Kisnorbo picked up a booking for a foul on Lambert as the referee came in for more stick while Puncheon followed him not long afterwards.

Leeds made a second change on 63 minutes with Neil Kilkenny coming on for McSheffrey.

Saints were doing a good job in the second half.

The game was not at all open like the first half with neither side getting a sustained spell of pressure and even half chances proving hard to come by.

But with a lead to protect Saints were ensuring Leeds never got a firm foothold in the game and always remained a threat themselves.

Pardew decided to introduce the threat of some pace on the break when Papa Waigo replaced Barnard on 72 minutes.

Leeds responded with their final change five minutes later with Max Gradel on for Becchio. Gradel got booked almost instantly for a challenge on Harding.

With ten minutes remaining and still only one goal in the game Saints must have been bracing themselves for a sustained spell of pressure from Leeds as they desperately hunted for a goal to get something from the game.

But it was Saints who were so lively on the break with Waigo testing Ankergren with a low shot from 20 yards.

When the fourth official held up the board it showed a minimum of five minutes of added time.

In fairness to Saints they had done a great job up until that point of strangling the game and were certainly not holding on.

They may have been slightly worried when Robert Snodgrass took aim from 25 yards but his shot whistled just wide.

That proved to be Leeds’ last foray and Saints took a well deserved and impressive three points from the game.

Superb game, dominated it and hardly tested Kelvin in the goal, Jermaine Beckford, ha ha ha no wonder there was no club interested in him, 1st half he could'nt stay on his feet and kept whinging to the ref all the talk before the game about Beckford and Lambert..... and what a poor performance from the ref .... shocking decisions - cannot wait to hear what AP has to say about him !!!, Jaidi and Fonte absolutely superb today as was the whole team ....... !

It should have been more, but yet again we have a Referee who gave us next to nothing, and I could not see what Jedi's goal was ruled out for, he was being fouled himself, and poor old Barney took a real clattering and never got a free kick all afternoon, we must be getting better if we can reduce Leeds to one attempt on target, Forte and Jedi were imense and Thommo had a blinder after Semi went off. Not a bad performance on the pitch from any Saints player. Beckford was a real disapointment, throwing himself down a couple of times, luckily nothing given.

Bring on Swindon. COYRs

But for an awful referee,it should have been a more comfortable victory.Well done Saints,Leeds pressed in the second half and its just the sort of game where we would have conceded late in the past and possibly even lost to an injury time winner. An excellent performance from the whole defence.Kelvin was a virtual spectator throughout.Alan Pardew deserves our continued support and confidence in building a future top side in higher divisions.

This write up is as shocking as the ref was today. Talk about sitting on the fence.

Let's get one thing straight. Gradel was booked for shoving Harding to the floor by his face and should've got a straight red.

As far as I'm concerned we won 2-0 today and dirty Leeds finished with 9 men.

Did I mention how bad the ref was??

Just got back, still buzzing. I'll deal with the negative aspects first. Ref was atrocious, worse than the one when we played away to the mk dons in JPT. He was absolutley disgraceful, for a Prem ref he was disgusting. How he disallowed our goal is beyond me, For those who didn't see it watch Fonte at front post. I thought he'd given a penalty so have no idea how he came to the conclusion that we made a foul. Absolute disgrace. Also, all little decisions went their way. Oh well, let the FA shove the 'Respect the Ref' campaign so far up a certain area it hits them in the teeth.

On positive side of things. We were brilliant. Our two centre backs were brlliant. Beckford and Beccio looked ubbish. Beckford never off the floor. They effectively looked League 2 players. Fonte and Jaidi dominated and they never looked like scoring, only reason we thought they would is either cos of the ref or our own nerves getting better of us.

Won all the midfield battles and just looked a far superior team to them. On another positive note, heard some of Cortese interview on way back and they're definitely at the club for the long haul so thats good news. Even talk of relocating the ground.

All in all, cracking day to be a Saints fan!!!

Rickyand Barny got pushed shove kicked and elbowed all afternoon and never complained
Leeds are one of the dirtiest sides in the league and Becky is a big girly CHEAT who could so easily have been boked three times for diving

I don't know but may be the 4th ref should go into the changing room at half time and tell the 3 nutters oon the field of playwere they are going wrong as I have just seen saints play of of this world great team.
The FA has to get hold of these referees just because we are in the 1st or the old 3rd disions does not mean we should get 2nd or even 3rd rate referees.
I have never been so angrer with the way the referee and lines man were today.
I would like to say so much more but if we can sort out our problems with playing on the s**ty petches we sould be going up next year for sure soCOYR''s

Truly a game for football purists, as a team performance, we were quite awesome again today, we played just as well as we did against Wallsall & Huddersfield but in a different way. As my eldest son said we have not defended that well for years!!
I am not generally one to have a go at referees having had the dubious pleasure of reffing a few youth games but, unfortunatley, Mr Walton had what can only be described as a stinker today. He wasn't helped much by his linesmen who appeared equally blind bar a few occasions. I don't think he set out to be biased, he was simply wrong on far too many decisions. I wonder if the referee assessor will mark him down? Perhaps he has had a few poor games in the prem which is why they busted him down to league 1. Just a pity they didn't give him to Aidy Boothroyd, now that WOULD have been justice!!

A great win for the lads today, strong from back to front and never looked threatened. The standard of refereeing in this league is terrible and really needs to be addressed. my ratings...
Kelvin-7(nothing to do but distribution good))
Dan H-8(solid as ever. Deserved his goal)
Rhadi J-9 (immense, didnt miss a thing)
Jose F-9 (as RJ, didnt miss a thing, organised defence well and is pure class)
Wayne T-8 (solid, seems to be getting better!)
Jason P- 8 (gave their RB a torrid time, he like fonte, is a different class)
Dean H-7 (solid captians performance, kept the midfield well organised throughout)
Morgan S-7 (not too influential but still a solid performance)
Adam L- 7/8-(very busy all game, didnt give leeds time to settle on the ball, really got stuck in at times)
Lee B- 7 (given a torrid time and was set upon by the leeds defence but still kept his cool and put in a good shift)
Rickie L- 7 (won pretty much everything thrown at him but is really begining to look tired and could do with a couple of games rest)

Overall, a superb performance through the entire team, professional, composed with a touch of style....COYR!!!!

I think Rickie put in a different kind of performance today, less predatory more of a providing, supporting role, no less valuable, it was just another string to his bow, he is more than just a goalscorer, he ought to be rested perhaps, but would he want that? He may think that being dropped would be a criticism of his performance, and nothing could be further from the truth.

Quite tense in the Chapel today, mainly due to the ref and his poor decision making. I was sure he was gong to give them something. 5 minutes injury time, where did that come from. Thought Saints were great bit still room for improvement. Barny started to go to ground too much second half. I also thought Jason ran out of steam 2nd half. Needs to pass it more or get the ball in quicker. Jaidi was a god today. Had a Leeds fan to right and behind today (in the Chapel). Also 31,000 today well done guys. One team in Hampshire!!

I don't think he is worried about expansion, as that is possible. Its more concerned with developing the ground. Such as travel links, local area, who they can use the ground etc. At the end of the day, he knows what is best for the club. He and Liebherr are fronting the money so we know we'll stay debt free so its about how they can develop the business.

Ok great result but today Lee Barnard and Rickie Lambert didn't gel at all. Our only outputs were Lallana and Puncheon. Puncheon needs to pass just a little more, and sometimes get the cross in earlier. Thought that Morgan was a close second man of the match, held it in midfield and controlled the game. But the man of the match was Jaidi as he was a brick wall and nothing got passed him. Also Wayne Thomas played well. Well done Dan Harding great goal and great job on keeping a cool head because it is easy to get frustrated and react when a northerner pushes you in the face.

Tired happy wee fan today.. 2hrs sleep what a game and what a shocking ref.

Swindon and Dons coming up this week. We'll be celebrating St Paddy's day Weds Morning when that kick off (NZ time) so a good omen for Davie to get in there.

Nicola laid things on the line... Gap to chase. Consistency to find. He's on the side of the fans in everything that's cost effective and fair.

Looking at traffic problems and infrastructure including the location of the stadium... if the council can't handle extended capacity at SMS maybe we'll see a new stadium in a place where traffic will be a lesser problem.

Loves having an owner that comes over for games and goes home again. Wife and kids like living locally so all seems great for him and the club.

To top off a great late summers day Nicola says yes to an NZ tour for Saints...hahaha when they Win Europe in 4 years... Yes!!!!!

Davis - A very typical Dracula performance. Looks completely solid when he ball flies down his throat, but flaps like a budgie in all other circumstances. Luckily he didn't have too much to do today, but Saints hearts are always in their mouths when the ball goes anywhere near him. 5/10.
Otsemobor - Looked fairly good until he had to go off. From my seat in the Kingsland, I have no idea why he was subbed. 6/10.
Fonte - Quality. Never looked under any pressure. 8/10.
Jaidi - He still looks like commiting a foul every time he competes for a ball, but had a solid game today. 7/10
Harding - Pretty solid in defence, hopeless in attack, but bizarrely scored the winner. 6/10.
Puncheon - For the first 70 minutes, Jason played wide right, but, as a left footer, needs to constantly cut inside to have an effect. With 20 minutes to go Parfoot finally grasped what we have all known for nearly a month, and swapped wingers. Puncheon will be a revelation now he is being played in the correct position. 8/10.
Hammond - Standard stuff. Reminds me very much of Jim Magilton at his worst. Will never pass forwards if there is a sideways pass available. 6/10.
Schneiderlin - Quality. Genius. Fantastic technique. 8/10.
Lallana - Once Parfoot moved him to the right wing after 70 minutes Adam started playing as we all know he can. Since the Pompey game, Lallana's commmitment and defensive abilities have really come to the fore. Great game today. 8/10.
Lambert - A bit quiet by his standards. Won plenty in the air again, but badly needs a rest. 6/10.
Barnard - Infuriating today. He has all the striking attributes that we have needed all season, and started the game looking sharp, and set for more goals. However, he spent the whole of he first half either falling over or whining at the ref. It is true that the ref gave very little in his favour, but all hetrosexual males know how much effort it takes to stand up, and Brnard was going down far too easily. 7/10.
Thomas - Another solid performance. Wayne usually looks a bit like a centre-back playing at full-back, but today he was overlapping regularly. 7/10.
Papa Waigo - I have no idea what he was up to, and I doubt whether he does either. More effective than the little mascot that played against Huddersfield though. 6/10.

NZ is going to the World Cup...
1 team in the Aussie A League but in all honesty Saints are better than any all but maybe the '82 World Cup side.

It's a holiday tour... show case
Couple of games in Aus and NZ maybe one in the States on the way back.

Would be brilliant PR and good for the players... Pards was down a while back... Solent Team were keen weren't they haha.

Can't believe we didn't make it on the league show. How can they not even show the goal, I replayed it twice, as I thought I'd missed it. They are disgraceful and something needs to be done. You'd think knocking down a club like Leeds would of had a bit more coverage anyway. Thought the reports had to be neutral!!!!!!!!!! Sort it out BBC

On the game I thought Jose and Raidhi were superb, woth the ref was smoking I do not know, how Gradel stayed on the pitch is a mystery. As for Beckford what a cheating Jessie. I thought listening to NC on the way down was a breath of fresh air and I told him so at the ground he politely said "Thank you very much." .....the goal and all 30 secs of the game minus the usaul skate lack of comment is on the red button. Great performance from the lads yesterday, especially first half when playing against the ref too. Awful decisions and was he rightly booed off at half time. Could and should have been more than 1 up, was behind the goal in the Northam, couldn't see anything wrong with Jaidi's goal and looked very much like a handball block on the line from Barnards goal scramble. Have attended every home game apart from Stockport and Huddersfield due to work commitments since the Exeter game on boxing day and in all league and cup games including Exeter we haven't let a single goal in at the Northam End. Must be some sort or record. Please comment if Im wrong. COYRs

I wonder where the game Leitch was reporting on above took place?
I was at St Mary's. Leeds were even dirtier than Huddersfield, and the referee turned a blind eye to their every excess.
Given the Echo's editorial policy on Bedford Place, I'd have thought the violence on the pitch yesterday, especially against Barnard, would justified a report of some sort.

Fonte has clearly thrown his head into Becchio's arm pit! He's then grabbed his arm and forced Becchio to "cuddle" him round the neck! To the untrained eye it looks as if Becchio is fouling Jose but fortunately for the good of football the referee is highly trained and spotted this infringement by Jose! A similar incident happen at Tranmere when the penalty was awarded! It looked as if the Tranny's poor control had let him down and he threw himself to the floor! If you watch again you see Dan Seaborne punch the Tranny in his kidney with his left little finger, causing momentary paralysis! Another quality spot by the official! We are lucky to have such quality officials!

I thought my Sky box had packed up but it looks like it was for everyone. At least you can see the disallowed goal on i-player.

In the interests of fairness and balance I think someone should stand up for the referee. It just won't be me. Even Leeds must have been shouting at him for some of the Jaidi tackles, there's always a push or an arm at the last moment. I thought Spiderman was brilliant yesterday, Leeds were crowing about the strength of their midfield but Spiderman picked up every loose ball and laid it off quick as a flash to a red shirt. I was disappointed with Barnard, but he got totally fustrated when the ref gave him nothing. Just about every game I've seen Lambo gets the same treatment but just gets on with his game.

Next up - Swindon, should be good.

Great result for the lads yesterday although the final result flattered Leeds some what. I have seen beckford twice now both home and away and don't understand how teams like everton were linked with him because he is over rated!

Also remember the final the final day of 06/07 season, we played the already relegated southend to gain our place in the play-offs. Well our final game this season is southend at home who are also likely to get relegated. I know this is just a cliche but still remaining optimistic.

Great result.
We looked good and made leeds look bad!
Jaidi and Fonte were massive.
Never seen more team determination
to secure a result.
Kelvin was not required to do anything but he did it well.(nice beard)
Ref was crap and got abused for good reason.
AP's Red Army chant was huge and even the middle Kingsland made an effort.
Why do I always end up sitting next to a Bloody Expert.
Earache from the Left of me and garlic breath from the right!
Stuck in the middle with me!
Cheers for the bed slugger and now monkjack is off the menu.
Guinee Pig and Hampster are going to be my new favourites if I stay again.Should have slept in the attic!!
LOL ;-)
Can someone get in touch with Swindon and tell them to start loosing!!!

As for Schneiderlin..do you have a special realtionship with him ? he was ok but not the best. Also you obviously don't understand Hammonds role. Please get with it or dont post.
Clearly I could have given every player 10/10 and saved myself a little time. But that is of no use to the overseas Saints who cannot attend, for no fault of their own, and want to know exactly what happened.
So I'm very sorry if this offends your happy-clappy sensibilities, but it wasn't aimed at you.

Everything is personal and from an individuals point of view.

Nope costa baz, your right, some of us ex pats have followed saints for more than 30 years and know a good team when we see it, this team is on fire,no individual analysis to be made, but an appreciation of the team wholistically.
Still think the best player is hammond though, no 10/10 score just an opinion.
Its a crying shame that we started with -10, cant hide from it,its a fact not an excuse, personally I expect just outside the playoffs, and that is a massive acheivement this season.
The pressure next season to acheive will be unbeleivable, that will be the true acid test, the rest of this season -a party.

Just seen our disallowed 'goal'.
If ever proof was needed that the 'goal' was good and that no Saints player had committed a foul, just look at the reactions from the Leeds players.
None of them even appealed for a free kick whilst the player who had been marking Jaidi just sat on the floor.
In fact the only player asking for a free kick was Fonte, after he had been pulled down for a penalty!!!
Confirms for me that the ref was a t0sser.

Not saying we will make the play offs, but over the last 4 games we have picked up 8 points more than Huddersfield, 5 points more than Swindon & Colchester, 2 points more than the Dons, BUT 1 less than Bristol Rovers.
As we know, our next 2 games are against Swindon & MK Dons, so pick up a win against both and you can see the pendulum swinging our way and their nerves staring to jangle even more.
Colchester seem to have slumped just at the right time for us (1 point in their last 9) and although Bristol Rovers are doing well now, their next 2 games are 'virtual' derbies against Exeter and Yeovil, and when you add into the mix that we still have to play them as well, THEN add in our game(s) in hand, well longshot or not, keep on hoping.
Our downside may be that we only have 3 games against teams that are currently above us, which means we MUST overcome our problem against lower placed teams, especially on our travels.

Have to agree with the others on your ratings, are you sure that you were at the same game as the rest of us, looks like your bias against certain players is clouding your judgement a wee bit. However you must be allowed to have your opinions and I cannot see any cause for abuse towards you or from your goodself to others, I think we are all on the same wavelength?

As for the TV coverage, Sky froze so I quickly changed to Freeview and caught the fifteen seconds that they showed, but it was all over too quick to form an opinion on the disallowed goal, and they could not have said less if the tried, very poor coverage as ever. Some things never change.

if we'd have had our current squad at the start of the season,we'd be walking this league....no doubt in my mind whatsoever,a few dodgey away resusts (the best in the world get them),but we are now out playing the "best teams" in L1....watch out all, because the saints coming !!!!!

Just one other thing eaglespark, is your reference to "Parfoot" intended to be disrespectful? It just comes across that way.

Hi Guys, I was listening to the chairman's interview on Radio Solent on line whilst the league show was playing the Championship games.
Our match was shown, it was first up. It was late, so you guys must have blinked, since the whole piece lasted the few seconds following the cross that Ricky Lambert held up before it went from Puncheon on on to Dan Harding. That was it the only comment whilst the goal was shown, being the final score.
Still we might get a brief showing on South Today, tomorrow.

Eaglespark. I sit in the chapel. I go to 90% of away games (inc Hartlepool on a Tuesday night , 7hrs journey each way from Devon ) and obviously watch the game closer than you do . Why call Pardew, Parfoot ...Pathetic.
Read the other comments and you will realise what nonsense you talk ! !
Really so annoying. Opinions are great , nonsense is for the playground

Watching Rickie work in the box is becoming such a treat. His assists are high, his work rate from what I get to hear and see is great.. Leeds failed completely to stop him getting that ball to Punch and Dan.. he was in an impossible position reversed spun and chipped...pure class and worth every bit the mil.

Everyone should have a careful listen to Pards pre Leeds interview on the player. It's Pards at his best giving his thoughts on players contributions and the way they are competing for places on the team. The competition that is lifting them to better levels.

Listen to it.. everything he said showed through into the game. If this isn't the guy that will take this team through to the next level I'll eat my Red Army Beanie.

I'm loving the ride and loving the way the season is coming together, not just the sms set up and leadership, not just the team spirit thats showing but the way the fans are uniting into a good band at the ground and around the world.

The squad felt the pain and shame from Tranmere.. gave respect to Tranmere, have the class to admit their mistakes then they bounced back to beat Leeds United.

At the start of the season ppl laughed after a few games my thought was that we'd be a point or two short but hoped we could make the play offs.. quite a few agreed but the majority scoffed and only hoped for safety.

My honest gut feeling is that we'll not just get to the prem but to the top of Europe. Laugh and scoff all you like, I don't mind.. if I'm shown up but stop for one second to check the credentials of Nicola Cortese in finance and in company structure and you should see that he is a man that can offer English football an awful lot using Saints as a flagship model. See what odds you can get on a bet that Saints will win the Champions league in 2016. Would the odds be worth a tenner.. :)

I'll look forward to seeing a big bunch of away fans for the NZ Tour..

Spot on mate, we would have beaten those fishy fingered fakwits down the road as well.
There is no team in this league and half the Championship that comes close to us now.
A few decent additions in the summer and we will be well away.
Record points total for a promoted club next year.. get your bets in now..

watched the "assault" on Jose by Becchio before the Jedi's disallowed goal! The referee is perfectly placed to see it and gives them a foul! Unbelievable!
