Rickie Lambert can be a Southampton FC legend

ALAN Pardew believes Rickie Lambert can become a Saints legend.

The £1m striker took his tally to 30 goals for the campaign with a brilliant second half hat-trick to inspire Saints to a fourth victory this season over MK Dons.

Pardew thinks that Lambert cannot claim to be in the bracket of legendary names who have played for Saints at this stage.

But if he can lead the team back to the top flight, his name might sit up there with the pantheon of brilliant players to have represented the club such as Matt Le Tissier, Terry Paine, Mick Channon and Ron Davies and Kevin Keegan.

He said: “I can wax lyrical about Rickie but the reason our fans sing his name every week is they know how important he is to the team.

“He’s got to take us through two divisions and he can.

“For me that would make him as big a legend as some of the big big names you’ve had here – the Mick Channon’s and Kevin Keegan’s.

“He’s in the first division at the moment and perhaps he doesn’t deserve to be here.

“But he’s in here and if he can get us out of both divisions then he will warrant that kind of tag.

“At the minute he’s not done enough to be a legend of Southampton, but he’s had a great first three quarters of the season.

“There’s a quarter left and he’s still got to be the best goalscorer in the league and I hope he wins it.”

The question now is just how many goals Lambert could end up with by the end of the campaign.

At his current rate he would break the 35 barrier and could even push on towards an incredible 40.

“He’s just got to keep his standards, as if he does that certainly another five will come his way, maybe more,”

reckoned Pardew.

“He’s a really great lad and sometimes he’s a little bit laid back in his manner but it was really Rickie’s game, especially second half.

“He’s had a great season and that sets him up for the last ten games to finish the season as the best goalscorer in the division, and for me the best player in the division.”

Pardew was quite critical of his star man’s first half display at MK Dons, but he certainly put that right with three goals in 28 second half minutes.

“I wasn’t particularly pleased with him in the first half,”

admitted Pardew.

“Rickie has set himself such high standards and he needed a goal.

“But the third goal, which he has been threatening all year, wasn’t a surprise to me.

“He’s tried that two or three times and the way he strikes the ball it was obvious one was going to come off.”

The line I like here is "He's got to take US through 2 divisions.."
If we can hold onto Pardew, Lambert and the rest of this squad through our 5 year plan then we can be confident of good times ahead (irrespective of play-offs or promotion this season)

I laughed like a drain on Saturday morning. Listening to Talk Sport that lump Quinn who played for the skates was discussing the mess the club was in when he started laughing at the notion that PFC players had image rights. "Look" he said "I played for them and I can tell you when you play for Pompey you have no image."

I would be happy to see him rested Tuesday night as Barnard is cup-tied and connoly is coming back. I know the league is still important but I am not getting my hopes up on that. Lets win a trophy this season and go for the league title next season. After watching us being beaten by Swindon on Tuesday I see AP'S view of going up with a far better winning attitude and Swindon had a very solid unit. They were the best team ive seen down here by far !!

No way. You can't rest Rickie Lambert while the chance of the play-offs is still on. Also Swindon were not that great maybe you meant better than most league 1 teams that have come here? but definitely not as good as the skates and even Ipswich.

So when can we play him then? I don't know what sort of wages he's on but surely if we can only play him 20 minutes at a time at home, then he's too expensive, regardless of the undeniable fact he's prem quality, to keep on?

I seriously hope you are right and we keep hold of our top players. However, we have to expect that come the end of the season, the vultures will begin to circle around the emerging talents in the lower divisions and offers will innevitably come in with tempting transfer fees and bigger wages.
If the club is serious about getting promotion next season, we ought to offering these players improved deals now to tie them in. If we do that, we have every chance of doing a Forest or Leicester, both pushing for successive promotions.
I hope you are reading Nicola and Markus?

The pitch at Wembley was due to be re-laid over the weekend according to the FA, due to the poor state of the one used in the last few matches. So a new pitch should not cause the worries like the old one.

The term "legend" is such an over used word these days.
The media attaches this description to any "five minute wonder" in sport or popular music, most of whom then disappear without trace.
Lambert has done well this season, by poking in goals in but remember this is in the third tier of English Football.
He is no where near legend status.
For real legends look no farther than Manager Ted Bates and Terry Paine , the greatest player ever to pull on a Saints shirt, who jointly, took Saints from Division 3 South to Division 1. The equivalent of taking the Saints from CocaCola League 1 to the Premiership for all you youngsters
Unfortunately their years of hard work was undone by Lawrie McMenemy, another of the
mis -described "legends" who took them straight back down to Division 2 kin 5 months!!

It should be Chris or do the switch with Dan Harding and Fish again.. clean sheet and can only get better.

Chris Perry has been a Stalwart for the club playing out of his skin at the right time. He deserves his Wembley starting place.

Keep Lloyd as a back up centre mid, emergency back.

Numbers are messy and only really show consistency. Milwall have now won 10 of their last 12 matches.
Leeds have won only four of their last 13 league games.. The Lions look to be able to shove them back for the play offs and maybe year 4 in L1.
We've won 7 from 12 and had a lot of shudda won games. we had enough chances to beat Swindon three times.. credit to their very good goal keeper. They've had some scrappy results with 5 wins from 10.

Come on Saints please get the win over The Pools .. we do need to prove ourselves as credible contenders by soundly winning the remaining games of the season.

I know a lot of you (who have probably received their tickets) are fed up with this subject but it's Tuesday, post has been, AND I STILL HAVE NO TICKETS!!!!
.
I bought 4 in the first hour on the first day of sale, Monday 25th February. SFC says posting will start 15th March. If tickets are not received by 22/23 March call dedicated number 0845 688 9391. I thought, OK, I'll call SFC office first to check - got told the same dedicated number (which I thought was Wembley ticket office - it's not - it's SFC Office). Tickets posted Friday and if they're not here tomorrow, Wednesday, give us another call!!!
.
This has been very badly organised in my opinion. I, along with 'several' others, should not be having to wait until 4 post days before the final for these tickets when they were purchased 4 weeks ago!! They are obviously not sending these out in the order they were sold, otherwise I, and many others, would ahve had then on 16th/17th March.
.
Worried of Totton :)

I've watched SRL closely and you know, even his running is reminiscent of Le God - it's eerie I can tell you! Yes, if we can keep him during the summer he will be a legend. I hope he takes after Mattie in that aspect of his make up!

They are obviously not sending these out in the order they were sold, otherwise I, and many others, would ahve had then on 16th/17th March. . Worried of Totton :) . I've watched SRL closely and you know, even his running is reminiscent of Le God - it's eerie I can tell you! Yes, if we can keep him during the summer he will be a legend. I hope he takes after Mattie in that aspect of his make up! . COYRS!!!!!!
Ditto, tickets bought first day, and still not arrived, my brother bought his two weeks ago and they arrived Saturday, we paid for two tickets and two coach places, today were told we might have to get the tickets when we are up wembly. Something has gone wrong and it is very worrying, we should have the tickets and be looking forward to Sunday.
