Carter's in shop window

Saints may have another look at Darren Carter after the Preston player impressed in last night’s 1-0 pre-season friendly win over Barnet.

The 26-year-old midfielder was a surprise inclusion in the Saints side at Underhill as he looks for a new club after being told by North End boss Darren Ferguson he can leave.

Carter did well in the central midfield area and the former Birmingham and West Brom man, who has played at the top level and moved for fees totalling almost £3m in his career, has already turned a few heads at Saints.

For a video of the top stories in today's Daily Echo, click the front page.

He played for Saints after failing to agree terms for a move to Millwall last week.

Boss Alan Pardew said: “We had an opportunity for Darren to come and play for us and we took that opportunity to have a look at him."

The article doesn't say he wasn't good enough for Millwall, it says he could'nt agree terms, so they probably did want him.

Can't believe some of the negative moaners on this site at times, if you read the people posting after the Barnet game, saying he hasn't achieved anything in his career, blah blah blah, so what? if he had he wouldn't be looking at joining a club in league 1 would he? We should be taking a punt on players like him more often, because if you look at some of the finds AP's made in his short time here, he hasn't made many errors, so far, so i'd respect his judgement over that of a few geeks who put a players name into wikipedia and automatically say, oh he's s***!

i'm sick of some of these moaners. He is a good player. And anyway, the reason he didnt sign for millwall was because they couldnt afford his wages, we can. SIMPLES :)

I have to say I had not heard of him before, but I like the way A.P gives them a trial before committing money. If he has played at the top level, then he can't be bad, and just because Ferguson doesn't want him, doesn't make him a bad player.
If A.P offers him a contract, then he will have earn't it.
On another front, where's Vassell.

Sign Darren Carter now. One year contract - perfect back up to Spider and Hammo. Lets all be realistic, no CM of any ability is likely to come to Saints to warm the bench. This is why Dannes. Lines. Stock etc have not come. And please play the first XI on Saturday. Mine is: Davis, Butts, Dicko, Jose, Jahdi, Spider, Hammo, Adam, Punch, Rickeeee and St Barnard. Any thoughts............

Read the comments properly but a total arrogant response from a Saints fan that if he's not good enough for Milwall he's not good enough for Saints. How do you come to that conclusion they are championship Saints are League 1 so what do you conclude from that my friend they are better than saints as they are in a league higher.
Some fans are getting a bit too arrogant before the season has started and you could be eating humble pie if it all backfires.

Carter is no ambrose or Bailey thats for sure. I would think AP is thinking of getting him to bring on instead of Wotton.

Still need a winger and a striker. All this call for vassell or someone quick to play with lambert?? Whats all that about. AP has said he wants back up for Lambert - i.e Le Fondre or Charlie Austin. He already has a partner for Lambert in Connelly and barnard.

Carter (year contract)
Winger (please tie up terms for antoino at teh weekend - that often happens when terms play each other).
Striker - Le Fondre is young and won all sorts of players of month, season awards thats what we need someone we can help progress.

Personally I would love us to get these three in but also the goal scoring midfielder AP always talked about early summer. Danns could be the one there?

He is a 26 Year old who has played at the highest level.
We are in League 1, whether we are favourites or not we are still in league 1.
This is exactly the type of player we should be taking a punt on.
Id be very surprised if Millwall didnt think he is good enough because he is just the sort of player with Championship experience they need.
Sign him up AP.

It would be except Lallana and Punch are both injured. Lallana won't be fit for the Plymouth game (let alone Reading), Punch should be back for Plymouth but will probably miss out against Reading as I doubt Pards would risk him.
I would think he'd go for Holmes or maybe Oxlade-Chamberlain on one flank, with Mills or Dickson on the left, leaving Harding at left back.
Or maybe we'll have a new signing by then?

Can he score goals tho? Would be good cover with Wotton. Still think we need another winger and striker that can play off of Lambert - pref with pace and can finish. Maybe look at Arsenal Reserves - Sanchez Watt maybe? as he looks a good player and can play on the wings.

Well, I said it last season and I'll say it again this season. We need to sort out centre mid. We have hammond and spiderman. Neither really stick their foot in and neither score 10 goals per season in the league. Also, neither can split a defence with a cheeky through ball. We need a ball winner and a flare player in there that can take free kicks. If the mcgughan rumour is true and we get him, we'll win the league. He won that last CCC for forest against us. He's bullish and too good for league 1.Perfect.We wont dominate from week to week with 2 centre midfielders that are jacks of all trades but masters of none.Carter will be a good squad player by the sounds of it, and I dont ever want to see wotton in a saints shirt ever again. His hearts in the right place but to be honest, its embarrassing! You cant have a shaven head with a voice that high pitched.its just silly!

Darren Carter didn't go to Millwall because Preston & Millwall were not able to agree upon terms ....not because he was not wanted by them. As others he is still young at 26 & has played at the highest level & I'm sure he'll be in the line up against Reading so a final decision on whether he joins the club can be made. Definitely could be a great addition to the Club & a compliment to Saints that he's interested in signing for them.

I appreciate that there is still awhile to go for AP to sign players, but I am concerned for us, and I believe to call us favourites to go up at the moment is premature and arrogant for these reasons.

1. We have lost some good players and not replaced them ie Papa, Antonio. These were players that could turn games and be good to come on in the last 20minutes.

2. So far we have signed 3 full backs and nobody else. We need another CM

3. We have a very strong nucleus but could easily be hampered by injuries, where would we be if Rickie had a long term injury - up the Swanie.

4. Our 1st team wasn't good enough against the more dogged and defensive teams last season - I can't see it being any better at the moment having lost Papa and Antonio

5. Last season we signed two players in the £1m region, it doesn't seem that we are prepared to do that. Is somebody loosing interest?

Lets hope I'm wrong and we have a cracking season.

Ontario Saint says...

Ashby Saint said " Our 1st team wasn't good enough against the more dogged and defensive teams last season - I can't see it being any better at the moment having lost Papa and Antonio"

"Our team" had a really slow start last season and the momentum really started to build half way thru the season after which we were beating all the top teams, including those who were promoted.

Yes, we lost 2 excellent players but have more than replaced them with the likes of Richardson, Butterfield etc and others we may be in the process of signing.

Lets not forget we started off with minus 10 points last season & it was always going to be an uphill batle .

What everyone must have observed is that even though Saints are at the 3rd level, the Club is totally confident of success.

This is why players such as Carter, Vassell and other big names who have been linked with Saints.

It is a "new era" for Saints and players are willing to sacrifice the opportunity of playing at the championship level for the long term benefits that Saints can offer them ...(particularly the financial security of a Club now in the top 6 in the UK in the wealth of its owners).

Certainly much to look forward to . My only current concern are the current injuries to Richardson & Lallana ...they are both class players who the Club needs even more than Antonio & Waigo.

Red n White says...
4:46pm Wed 28 Jul 10

Hopefully AP will start with his first 11 against Reading and then if happy chop and change in the second half. Also, hope we don't play a 4-5-1 formation this season as we want to win games not draw 0-0. Saturday will be the real test and i hope AP won't devalue it by playing reserves.

Ashby Saint says...
4:47pm Wed 28 Jul 10

Hi Ontario,

I guess its a case of, is your glass half full or half empty?

There are some fans who believe that we will walk this division and I would just temper this positiveness or possibly arrogance, that it won't be a walk in the park, and although we have bought in some options for full-back we need to improve in other areas as it could be argued that we are weaker in some areas than yester year.

Indeed we did start late and picked up, but we actually finished the season in weaker fashion than Huddersfield, because we couldn't beat the likes of Tranmere. There were a number of games that we only one once a sub like Papa or Antonio were bought on.

Mr Ragworm says...
6:13pm Wed 28 Jul 10

Carter would be a fantastic addition for me, the likes of Vassel and Benjani were never going to be an option for us.
Big name signings are not for League 1, maybe next year we can start seeing a few washed up Prem players coming through the door, but for now its League 1 and the lower reaches of the Championship where we seem to be casting our net.
Bring on the season, cannot wait..

Fans of SFC have every reason to be chuffed, optimistic, and deserve to enjoy the favouritism of the pundits.

For years Saints fans have put up with crap from all and sundry and the threads have been full of slaggers from the Boo Brigade.

Tempered level headed optimism amongst fans should be lauded, cheeky arrogance at the mo is splendiferous and should be shouted from the highest hill.

Those worried about aspects of transfers... shouldn't as they should trust the Nicola and his management team to do what is necessary to achieve auto promotion this year! That is not arrogant it is the stated aim of our professional leaders and the fans expect it happen!!

If we were to look at the squad I feel we have the best set of goalkeepers in the division and also the best set of defenders, neither of which need more additions as we have good back-up. In midfield I can't see many taking the place of Hammond and Schneiderlin, so it would have to be a back-up. This Carter would be a good signing for this role. On the wings I think we need another someone with pace. Would like to see antonio back otherwise a youngster on loan from a premiership club until we have gained a reputation of being a strong Championship team and can attract the better players (Low Prem standard). Upfront we have 3 very good strikers, but can they play together? We definately need one more, specially if Lambert gets injured. Tyson would be a good signing to partner Lambert from the off with his pace, otherwise another loan until better players become available.

Rickie does play provider well hanging back and of course when he does it's still in range of the best boot in England at the mo..

Pards plays rotations well with that last half hour. The fresh legs and pace certainly brought results last season.

As well as pure pace he may be looking for solid skilful players that can make a difference on the soggy grounds against determined 11 man defensive teams.

I'd love Saints win the pie pie contests..

I saw that as well. Interesting about Connolly - but I don't know if that's just cos he hasn't chosen his number yet. Number 13 is obviously waiting for Bart to sign the contract. 8 and 11 are conveniently open for a central midfielder and a wide player.

I was hoping Lallana would be our No. 7 and Lambo No. 9 but Lambert did well in the shirt last season and he knows how much the No. 7 shirt means to the fans which is great!

Hopefully the 8 & 11 shirts being available means we should be getting in some more quality. After seeing some footage of Carter I'd happily give him No. 8! Scored some really good goals against top teams in the Prem.

Not sure any of the players would have fancied trying to wrestle the No.7 shirt from Rickie (he knows what this number means to Saints fans). Also, perhaps Adam asked to keep the No.20 as he has had this number for some time and perhaps it is lucky for him and he did not want to change.
Looking forward to watching the lads against Reading on Saturday and hope they put on a good display.

It's my opinion that the boot is on the other foot; NC is very much the Boss.
If you believe as I do that Southampton FC are GOING PLACES it will be as a direct result of NC's management skills, done on a restricted cashflow within correct business rules; i.e. no excessive borrowings.
I believe that AP is an excellent Manager but I bet that if we are not in a very strong league position come Jan.1st. that there will be 50+ applications from highly qualified men for his job.
And NC will decide who moves in and on.

In ALL Football Clubs the Manager identifies the players he would like to bring in and even suggests the transfer fee using his knowledge of the game. He will also be involved in talking to the player to sell the club and its vision. But it is the Chairman the negotiates the money, be it transfer fee or wages. They look after the business side plain and simple. The Manager can identify who he wants but the chairman always has the final say.

Do you honestly believe it was the correct decision to commence our pre-season with games against Thun and then Sochaux within the first 2 weeks of pre-season.? These are games we should be playing this week AFTER the likes of Farnborough,Sutton and Barnet. I am prepared to bet that AP did not arrange this important footballing matter and that when he heard of them had a quiet mutter under his breath......we'll have to await his memoirs to discover the facts however.

He will also be involved in talking to the player to sell the club and its vision. But it is the Chairman the negotiates the money, be it transfer fee or wages. They look after the business side plain and simple. The Manager can identify who he wants but the chairman always has the final say.
This post I agree with exactly.
I originaly disagreed with Aaron1 saying to AP 'don't muck this one up' when I don't think that he has mucked up yet.!!

Well yes that's basically what I said. Your post above suggests that NC is running the mafia! lol. I definitely see what you're saying frenchy but I really can't see anyone like Alan Pardew or any manager being told what to do.

I think it was a good idea (whoever it was) to take them to Switzerland and play good teams! It puts everything in perspective for them and shows they are not a top team themselves yet and to work much harder to improve. The french and swiz teams were similar standards to the Championships top teams in England and that's what we're aiming to be.

What happened to Tyson signing?? Someone on here claimed he signed last week !! Jokers

Noticed that someone had said that Carter would be on a free transfer. I don't believe this is true as he is not out of contract with PNE but has been told he is surplus to their requirements.

Supposeably terms could not be arranged with Millwall because they could not be agreed upon with Preston.

Imagine Preston have stated what they want as has Daren Carter and if he plays well against Reading the deal will then be completed.

Just my perception of the situation
