Richards predicts a bright Sports future
8:09am Tuesday 29th May 2012 in Hampshire Sport
MARK Richards is confident a good future lies ahead of Weymouth Sports despite their disappointing mid-table finish last season.
The club chairman saw his side end the 2011/12 campaign in ninth spot in the Dorset Senior League but he was still encouraged by some of the performances, particularly from the club’s young prospects.
Richards told Echosport: “I was disappointed with our final league position but realise there is so much potential at the club.
“Youngsters like Ed Bastick, Shaun Bessant, Jamie Quinton, Jon Rapson, Jordan Tewkesbury and Ben Thomas were all in their first season in men’s football and they have been a huge credit to the club.
“I am also pleased that co-managers Simon Austin and Chris Hicks are to continue leading the side next season and delighted that the majority of last year’s squad have re-signed for 2012/13.
“If we can now add to that existing squad with some good signings during the summer I am sure we will finish much higher next season.
“We will return for pre-season training on July 3 at the Marsh (6.30pm) and all new players are welcome.”
Sports held their end-of-season presentation evening at the Famous Old Spa on Dorchester Road where Stu Dixon (manager’s player), Sam Culpin (players’ player, supporters’ player), Robbie Rolls (leading scorer) and Richards (clubman) all picked up awards.
Tankards were also presented to Austin and Hicks as well as to former boss Steve Alcock, who stepped down last November, while Quinton and Bessant picked up special awards for playing in every league match.
Richards added: “Everyone at the club would like to thank all our sponsors and supporters for backing us throughout the season.
“We would also like to show our appreciation to Jake Richmond and Nick Bennett from Weymouth Reserves for their help and support.”
