Waterfield sets new British record

Southampton’s Pete Waterfield and 10 metre platform syncrho partner Tom Daley almost certainly confirmed their Olympic place today as they took gold and set a new British record at the British Gas National Championships in Sheffield.

The duo proved they would be genuine medal contenders in London too after producing a British record and personal best 475.55 in a meet that doubles as the Olympic trials.

Their place will not be confirmed until Monday's team announcement, although it is unthinkable that Daley, British diving's poster boy, or veteran Waterfield, who would make his fourth Olympic team, could miss out.

They would therefore head to London on a high after their best ever performance in their last meet before the Games.

In the springboard men's duo, Southampton’s Chris Mears and Nick Robinson-Baker claimed a third consecutive British title.
