THOUSANDS of fans
turned out to see
England's legends take on
their Scottish counterparts
at St Mary's last
night.
It proved to be an evening and a
result the great Alan Ball would
have loved.
A good late surge of ticket sales
saw Saints' ground half filled for the
match in which Peter Reid's
England side triumphed 2-0 over the
Auld Enemy, managed by Graeme
Souness, for the Alan Ball
Memorial Cup.

The game seemed a welcome
release for the many Saints fans in
the ground, a game they could actually
relax and enjoy after such a
tense end to a disappointing season.
An enjoyable evening got off to a
poignant start with a minute's
silence for Celtic legend Tommy
Burns, his death particularly touching
for many of the Scottish team
who had a close association with
him over the years.
The English and Saints fans were
remembering their own hero, the
brilliant Bally, and before and during
the game the little man's name
was chanted around St Mary's.
advertisement
Bally would have loved the fact
that both teams didn't just turn up
for a kick about and an exhibition
match but took it seriously and
wanted to win - and it was England
who came out on top.
It's a shame it wasn't marketed very well, No small england flags, tshirts, hats for the kids to buy outside the ground or in the shop relating to the legends game - just one larrge flag for £5. Only one Diner was open in the kingsland - Forget getting the kids a drink at half time. They could have done alot better including telling people the colours they were wearing Red-or white?

The marketing for this game was appalling. The ground would've been filled if promotion was done in a more professional manner - are we seriously saying that a match involving England and Scotland in honour of a much loved 1966 world cup winner who managed both Saints and Pompey couldn't attract more than 10000 spectators from this region?
Questions need to be asked.

I enjoyed the match, good old fashioned footbal. My only gripe, why no souvenir programme, it would have been nice to read about who I was watching, I am comfortable with the English players but know nothing about most of the Scots.

I played in the senior cup final at st marys about 3 weeks ago and there was prob more people there for that then there was last night. Great to see you get on the pitch last night Jimmy Well done bud, done your old man proud. It is dissapointing that there wasn't a better turn out for such a GREAT MAN. And why would none of the England players pass to Jimmy he is better than most of them out there!

Fascinating that you think the marketing was appalling. This despite flyer drops at all three final Saints home games, a four-week promotional campaign on Ocean FM, saintsfc.co.uk carrying the game over the course of the month, take a mate promotion, ticket offers to both hampshire universities, chamber of commerce, southampton university and local football clubs. Ever school in Hampshire was sent a letter and ticket offer and every local charity. I would be fascinated to know how much more you think could have been done to promote the game.
