Chris Woakes is relishing the chance to play for England again
Chris Woakes hopes he can join England's rise to the top of the one-day international rankings, on his home ground at Edgbaston.
But the Warwickshire seamer is well aware his participation depends entirely on the fitness of first-choice fast bowler James Anderson, who missed England's victory over Australia at The Oval two days ago with a groin injury.
"It's fantastic to be in the squad and involved again, and nice to know the selectors are thinking of me," he said. "It's an opportunity. But if Jimmy's fit tomorrow, then obviously I won't play."
Woakes was called up on Monday, for what would be his first ODI in England, as cover for a seam attack which will also be minus Jade Dernbach and Stuart Meaker in Birmingham.
The Surrey pair will travel to Wales for the funeral of their former county team-mate Tom Maynard, and Dernbach will miss the rest of the five-match NatWest Series because of a side strain.
Woakes may well get his chance therefore to help England bid for a 5-0 whitewash - they are 2-0 up, with three to play - which would see them depose Australia at the top of the International Cricket Council table, and become official world-beaters in all three formats.
"I think it's huge," said Woakes.
"To get number one status in Test match cricket was huge, and one-day cricket is the next target.
"It's exciting times ahead for English cricket."
