Jan Poortvliet will resist ringing the changes for tonight's Carling Cup first round match at Exeter.

Saints have a poor recent record in the competition and have lost to League Two opposition three years running.

During last season's loss at Peterborough George Burley shuffled his team about - as is almost customary for the Carling Cup these days.

But Poortvliet won't be doing the same.

The only changes he will make are giving goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski and central midfielder Paul Wotton first starts of the season.

In addition, Wayne Thomas will replace Michael Svensson who is not yet up to playing three games in the space of a week.

Otherwise Poortvliet will stick with his first team as he believes it is vital that they get as many games as they can to breed confidence following the injury time defeat to Cardiff on the opening day.

He said: "For the moment we have to go on with what we are producing and the boys in general will play again.

"There is no time at the moment to use other players because we are not ready yet with our product and what we want to show people.

"They have to play and believe in themselves and it's also a question of you want a certain way of football.

"Football is also a case of repeating, repeating, repeating to get it right "St the moment we have only been together six or seven weeks and we need games to produce what we want to produce."
