SO the clever bunnies at Isle of Wight Festival HQ have pulled one out of the hat yet again.
After months of speculation, they finally confirmed this week that they’ve managed to secure the services of Sir Paul McCartney for this year’s party on the island in June.
It had to be pretty special for the 40th anniversary of the inaugural festival and you don’t get much bigger than the celebrated and world-renowned former Beatle.
He’s music royalty and, like him or not, you can’t escape the fact that he’s probably the biggest living legend in the industry, having influenced pretty much every rock ’n’ roll band since the 60s.
This is a great coup for the festival considering Macca has never played a gig on the Isle of Wight, despite referencing it in his hit When I’m 64.
When hysterical fans packed the Gaumont in 1963 to see The Beatles they could hardly hear some of McCartney’s greatest works.
When McCartney appears at Seaclose Park on June 13, there may not be the screams, but just a wonderful opportunity to truly savour some of the greatest music of all time.

Have to agree with Scrutineer. Macca sang on one of the X-Factor live shows - insipid and weak, his voice is no longer up to the job. IoW line up is poor this year.

Carpe Diem wrote:No problem Carpe Diem. I just hate to see one of the all-time great performers way past his best, vocally. No way would I DARE criticise his musical instrument skills! I'm in no position to judge those! But anyway, his guitar and piano playing sound fine to me. No, I'm more worried that exposing his aged voice to a modern audience, will mean that he'll run the risk of being remembered by so many for how (poor) it sounds NOW. You see, I believe many people go to see someone like Paul MacCartney, who is obviously a legend, primarily, not to particulary listen to his voice, but too simply be in his presence as an experience in it's itself. But then of course, that was rather what Beatlemania was much about in the early days anyway! Anyway, hopefully, many contempary and future fans will prefer to listen to his recordings!

One has only to hear what performing so far beyond one's best can do to a singer's performance, by listening to the once GREAT Andy Williams' recent efforts.
Now, I would say two examples of performers who can STILL sing to a high quality level, after very long careers in show business are Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey, but I believe them to be rare exceptions. Who knows, maybe it all just comes down to ones' subjective opinion in the end anyway!
