JAMES Cameron is not one to rest on his laurels – or hundreds of millions of dollars – it seems.
Not satisfied with banking $730 million from his latest epic Avatar in 3D, he’s decided to look at his back catalogue and give that other classic and megabucks box office blockbuster Titanic a 21st Century revamp.
He’s had a lot of criticism from those who feel he is cashing in on new technological phenomena.
But what critics seem to forget is the audiences don’t have to buy the ticket if they don’t want to. Many will stay away having endured the endless showings of the 1997 film on TV, but others will be tempted by the promise of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet jumping out of the screen at them.
I personally think the ship’s opulent main staircase, the terrifying iceberg and Titanic’s hull rising from the ocean will look utterly spectacular with an extra dimension added.
And with its release set for 2012, a nod to the 100th anniversary of the ship’s maiden voyage and subsequent disaster, perhaps Cameron could prove the doubters wrong by donating the proceeds to a Titanic-themed charity project.
And, you’ve guessed it, I can think of no better place for the billions to be spent than right here in Southampton, where the Titanic journey began.
