What great timing for an announcement that the Ewings are back and set to provide some real escapism in such austere times.

It was once the biggest TV show in the world with cliffhangers that made the Nine O’Clock News headlines.

And now Dallas and all its shoulder pads and power suits are making a comeback.

Larry Hagman is reprising his role as scheming J.R Ewing alongside Linda Gray as screen wife Sue Ellen and Patrick Duffy is back from the dead as younger brother Bobby.

The excitement has been palpable among fans of the super soap, which ran between 1978 and 1991 and centred on the family scandals and betrayals at Southfork Ranch.

Having not seen the original, I’m rather looking forward to it.

It will be great to escape into the over-thetop lives of mega rich Texan oil barons rather than Fiz’s money woes or Whitney turning to prostitution.

I have a feeling it will be a hit if only for a regular journey into the garish world of the super rich.

For a lot of skint Brits, bankruptcy on the Cobbles and misery on the Square are just a touch too close to home.

And if it fails, they can always write it off as a bad dream…
