St Denys Cons B strive for ninth place - again

THEY could finish ninth again – now that would be interesting.

For the past three seasons, St Denys & Bitterne Park Conservative Club B have finished ninth in the bottom snooker division of the Southampton & District Social Clubs League.

And it could happen for a remarkable fourth year running.

Mark Stone’s side’s 4-1 win over visitors Totton Cons B saw them consolidate in 12th spot, five points adrift of ninth-placed Exbury (which is Gerry Sly’s favourite away venue, but not in the winter) with three games to play.

Stone said: “We could finish ninth again. That would be interesting. We enjoy it, that’s the main thing. We just enjoy an evening out.”

Sly said: “We used to start off well and then collapse in the second half of the season.

“We’ve had all sorts of different members but we never seen to recruit enough to give me cover so I don’t have to play,” he laughed.

“It is a good evening and you meet the same people over the years. I hope our crowd never folds up.”

The elegantly dressed Sly, who was in the motor repair business for nearly 50 years and now works part-time delivering prescription drugs, added: “I admired the way snooker was played in the old days.”

Stone reckons his long-term team-mate Sly is “a good man to have around”.

Meanwhile, Mark Duggan, who plays the game with his heart on his sleeve, said he loves playing last, especially when the scores are locked at 2-2.

“That’s my best position,” he said. “I like to see the whole room watching me play at 2-2.”

But Duggan added that the most important thing is that “we have a nice night with the lads and the other team”.
