A ‘smiling’ seal has been spotted swimming in the River Itchen.
Lucky photographer John Scamell captured the mammal unwinding on a piece of debris in the river near St Denys.
But finding a comfortable spot was no easy task for the seal.
John, a member of the Daily Echo Camera Club, filmed the seal’s fruitless attempts to gain purchase on the debris, which was being fiercely guarded by a black swan.
After regrouping underwater, the seal successfully managed to climb aboard, much to the dismay of the swan.
Although seal sightings are not regular, they have been spotted in the River Itchen in the past.
Many take joy in spotting the seals and watching their escapades.
